Gaming conventions

Does anyone here go to tabletop gaming conventions? My husband got back from Dreamation recently. Just curious!

Re: Gaming conventions

Sadly, I'm not a gamer. I've tried--I'm just not coordinated enough for video games!

Re: Gaming conventions

Table top gaming isn't video gaming. I would love to go to conventions. I am a huge D&D nerd! Alas, cash and a two year old are tough obstacles to work out when planning a trip to a convention.

Re: Gaming conventions

Ohhh, like board games then? I'm no good at that either. I'm a Scrabble/Boggle type girl.

Re: Gaming conventions

I would love to go to a gaming convention. Mostly I just get to anime convention. I got to go to a gaming and music convention back in January, but it was focused mostly on video games. My cousin and I are trying to go to Dragon Con this fall.

Re: Gaming conventions

Aww boho that's actually kinda cute!

Tabletop gaming in this instance mostly means dice based games. Like Dungeons and Dragons, where you have a character sheet with all of their stats and you role play your character with a bunch of other player characters and a dungeon master...the person who controls/describes the environments and non player interactions (like the bad guys, townspeople, shopkeepers, etc etc). Most outcomes of interactions (fights, persuasions, theft, etc etc) are determined by a roll of the dice!

I actually just bought a d20 (twenty sided die) necklace on etsy and i haven't taken it off in 3 days...its my geek badge of honor haha.

As for a convention...I would love to go, but I've never been to one sadly. :(

Re: Gaming conventions

of the few he goes to, he tells me they usually have a crafting area for spouses that don't game the entire time.

i kinda wanna go one year to play something silly and then knit the rest of the time, haha! I have too short of an attention span for most traditional tabletop games :\

Re: Gaming conventions

Most conventions have crafting rooms. And they're really cool. You get to keep what you make, and they have classes going on all the time. Not to mention that the vendors at cons are AMAZING! I could spend thousands of dollars. lol.

Re: Gaming conventions

I think I'm going to try and get to PAX this next year. They have dungeon crawls there. Last year, Wil Wheaton ran one. I would have DIED to play in that. If you haven't heard the Penny Arcade D&D pod casts, you need to!

Re: Gaming conventions

We will be heading down to the Dallas Comic Con in May for a friend's birthday/our anniversary. It will be my first con. :) I'm not very versed in all the comic books out there but I think it will be fun. Hubby would love to make it to a Gamesday (Games Workshop's event) and I'm up for anything that lets a bunch of geeks get together and geek out.

Re: Gaming conventions

GothicPanda, Dragon*Con is awesome! I used to go all the time. They have a great gaming section, and usually have all night 'Are You A Werewolf' sessions, among other things. I've picked up some pretty cool TCGs there.

Re: Gaming conventions

I had an awesome time at Midwinter Gaming Con (http://www.deaduntildusk.com/midwinter/) this year. They're moving to one of the former Milwaukee-era-Gen-Con hotels next year, too.

Re: Gaming conventions

I love tabletop gaming, but I tried going to Gamestorm once and it was a NIGHTMARE. It was 100% stinky, grumpy dudes with no social tact whatsoever. You know, the stereotype of tabletop gamers that make the rest of us look bad :( I love me some D&D or Whitewolf, but I'm not doing the tabletop convention scene again!

Re: Gaming conventions

I do love PAX, though, and they have a tabletop section. I think what makes the difference is the size and nature of the convention - PAX still gets its share of stinky and socially awkward, but it's much more dispersed.

Re: Gaming conventions

It's looking less likely now that I'm going to get to go to Dragon Con. ): *sad* I want to go so badly; it's been ages since I've been to a convention where I haven't had an art booth.

D&D w/ Wil Wheaton would be super spiffy.

Re: Gaming conventions

It would! Have you seen his D&D Live panels/shows? I think they're online, and they're pretty hilarious!
