Is the new knife law going to effect you

Hi Guys,

I have been selling Knives for over 30 years & have always been very careful to who I sell to, in my shop Antiques et cetera which I had for 10 years up until  2001 & at Fairs & now only online.

I have always & still do state in order to buy from me the buyer must be over 21 years of age, I also require proof of age . Firstly with what is going on in the world with Knife Crime, I know that most probably the knives used are just large Kitchen Knives & not expensive Collectable Knives.

But with the law changing very shortly, to sell online in the UK you have to make certain that the person buying the knife is the person that signs for it when it is delivered.

I have over the years sold many Bowie, Survival, Navaja & othe large knives as well as Folding & Silver Fruit Knives. But I have now decided sadly to only sell just smal Pen / Pocket knives.

I am interested to hear what other Knife sellers intend to do, I would love to buy knives from the USA, but with the 20% tax & very high mail costs it is not practical, also I do not know what customs will do & will they let them go through if they know that the parcel contains knives.

Lets hear your opinion on this subject.

Best wishes Ken - Antiques et Cetera

Re: Is the new knife law going to effect you

Etsy really seem to have lost the plot with this one, UK sellers are being prevented from selling knives…bread knives, butter knives and dining cutlery have been made unavailable to UK buyers…even small folding pocket knives with cutting edges under 76mm that are absolutely legal to carry on your person in the UK or send by post to anyone in the UK who is over 18 have just been labelled “not available in your region”. Strangely though I can still buy a 9” hunting knife from abroad. I have been selling quality vintage pocket knives to collectors in the UK on Etsy for some time from my Etsy shop Carbon Steel. These knives do not break Etsy’s own rules on prohibited items, they do not break any UK law and yet now they’re not available to UK buyers. I was not advised by email as to these items being restricted in any way and have had no response from any of the Etsy staff who are supposed to specialise in these matters. I get the impression that a member of staff in the UK has been overzealous and not read their own rules. This is probably also breach of contract.
