can someone please give me the list of items that will be affected by this new law. I'm not completly oblivious to what is going on...I know just about everything and have called my congressman...but I am still not sure if soap will be considered illegal to sell...
I wouldn't think I would be affected but I don't want to be a criminal or anything...

Soap in general I would think is OK, but if it's carved or molded into a shape that would be intended for children you may have a problem. To my mind there's almost zero possibility that soap would have lead in it, but the way CPSC has been defining things you never know...although if you have any liquid items that would be sold in bottles they may fall under CPSIA, because I think one of the concerns about phthalates was that it was found in plastic bottles.

There's another angle I hadn't thought of before, I don't do bath & body products but for those who do, are you supposed to get the phthalate testing done on your packaging too? I would think that would be one thing the manufacturer/supplier is supposed to do...

That's the problem, anniepoo - there is no list. It's just a blanket "anything intended to be used by kids 0-12". It is very vague. I hadn't even thought of soaps that are intended for kids to use, but I'd say it would be included.

I don't know...I'm so confused! I don't know what to do. Yes alot of my soaps are molded and would appeal to children but I don't want to pack it up until I know for sure... know what I mean!

I'm confused too - I'm not in the US, but most of my business comes from the US. I have visions of customs officers ripping open my carefully packed parcels and burning the contents, then hunting down the intended recipients and fining or taking them away. OK, that probably won't happen, but...

I know - it is stupid - I think it's terrible because in banning all these wonderful handmade items, parents are losing the choice to give their children a better start in life. I am convinced that handmade, organic, one of a kind made with love toys are better. What choice will I have but the crappy, licensed lumps of plastic coming out of China? Well, that's not for me or my kids.

I think the whole thing is orchestrated by some company that manufactures big plastic sterile bubbles. Just think of the slogan - "put your kiddies in here and they will live forever!" Bored as hell, yes, but alive...

Anniepoo I was about ready to cry the other day when I saw a story on our local news about how great it was that CPSIA had been enacted to protect kids! I had emailed the station it was on WEEKS ago with all kinds of links to information and stuff, and they totally got the wrong end of the stick! The only mention of its effect on small business was a short interview with a shop owner who said they were "concerned but continuing with business as usual". @@

I have been in contact with my local Goodwill and Salvation Army corporate officers because they are in contact with the CPSC, and my fingers are crossed that prudent changes will be made to MAKE THE STUPID THING APPLY ONLY TO THOSE GREEDY LARGE CORPORATIONS to whom it should apply ONLY!
