I've been looking over the CPSIA guidelines on their website. It's pretty incomplete. Their section on reselling clothing says: "Dyed or undyed children’s clothing made from natural, untreated cotton, silk, wool, hemp, flax, linen, and other untreated natural materials including coral, amber, feathers, fur and leather: OK to sell" Well and good. But not one word can I find about synthetic fabrics.

Does anyone know anything about poly, acrylic, and so on? How'bout rayon? I'm hoping to sell doll's clothing, and expect to be using some cotton/poly blends and other synthetic fabrics every so often.

Any information out there? Argh!!

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

So glad to hear the info from Joann's! I get all my fabric there.

For my soft sculptures and plushies I use the polar/blizzard/anti-pill fleece, depending on what colors are available.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

polyester is lead and phthalate free.

it depends on the synthetic.

the eco-felts, made from soda bottles are lead and phthalate free, as well.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

and trim... it's not a matter of ignorance... it's the fact that the CPSC didn't exempt that particular style of thread until it's proven to be lead and phthalate free.

trust me, it took moving a mountain to get average textiles exempted even temporarily, and there's not lead or phthalates in them, at all.

other than trace amounts.

so you have to understand, as i've tried to explain to you... that as producers, we're following the law closely... even when it makes absolutely no sense.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

here's something that surprised me. CPSI said plain 100% polyester with a smooth surface, so not fleece or brushed etc, doesn't need to be tested for flamability, because it always passes. blends with cotton however are apperantly more flamable!

So from what Staceyjean says, according to the CPSIA you can't go wrong with polyester. Dolls don't sweat anyway;-)

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

If you were to read further, there all stuffing, or anything that stays contained in the product is ok, as there is no direct contact. So if you use interfacing inside of a garment where it is lined, then you haven't a problem. It must be completely covered by safe outside covering.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

I never shop at Joann's. I go to Hancock. Should I call their store to see if they know the deal? All I use is 100% cotton, fleece (both anti-pill Fireside and regular Northern Lights), and Fairfield polyfil fiber. Also, some embroidery floss.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

so now it's ok if the manufacturer/distributor/big store retailer does the CPSIA testing??? i thought the gov't was expecting each crafter to do their own testing. if this is the case, how wonderful for all of you that make kid stuff!!

bugbites, you'd be surprised at just what DOES contain lead ... sad but true.
