polyester/synthetic fabrics?

I've been looking over the CPSIA guidelines on their website. It's pretty incomplete. Their section on reselling clothing says: "Dyed or undyed children’s clothing made from natural, untreated cotton, silk, wool, hemp, flax, linen, and other untreated natural materials including coral, amber, feathers, fur and leather: OK to sell" Well and good. But not one word can I find about synthetic fabrics.

Does anyone know anything about poly, acrylic, and so on? How'bout rayon? I'm hoping to sell doll's clothing, and expect to be using some cotton/poly blends and other synthetic fabrics every so often.

Any information out there? Argh!!

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

Ms. Drolette,

Regarding fabric, all apparel fabric sold by Jo-Ann meets the flammability requirements of the federal Flammable Fabrics Act. In addition, all apparel fabric that Jo-Ann sells meets the lead requirements of the CPSIA. By law, only children’s products need to be tested for lead content. Nevertheless, all fabric sold by Jo-Ann has been tested to comply with the lead requirements of the CPSIA.

We do not make the test reports public. The test reports contain confidential and proprietary information about the supplier / manufacturer that would be inappropriate to disclose.

To my knowledge, threads are not tested. The CPSIA applies only to children's products that are intended for ages 12 and under. Thread is a general purpose item.

I do not know what "pelon" is. Are you referring to the fabric inter-facing? If so, then this item would fall under the same category as threads.

Thank you.

Rayon is a natural fabric derived from cellulose, wood pulp but it processed.
Best to you!

So, if you are using JoAnn products, you are fine as long as no interfacing, stabilizers, or thread is used?

Yes usually it is. But there are manufacturers who make synthetic rayons.

I've had the unfortunate experience of trying to dye some :-) I *thought* it felt funny, but didn't do a burn test.

I wound up with some funky stained fabric- that didn't take a dye. finally burned it and yep- drippy like poly not ashes.

So be careful when reading labels- since there are some out there calling themselves rayon- when they are synthetic.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

I am wondering how you are supposed to sew childrens clothes without using thread!

They should test thread, too.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

It is true,Teegee, some "rayon" is synthetic, but you can tell, it is usually a lot more shiny than natural rayon which has a more buff finish. Also, you can tell when wearing it, natural rayon breathes and synthetic rayon makes you sweat alot, and feels rather disgusting once youve sweated out the armpits!

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

oh yeah= I know you can tell :-)

I had gotten a bunch at a FABULOUS discount store near me. It's basically a big warehouse- though I won't bring my jkids in there- because its so stuffed- I swear if there was a fire the place would go up in about 12 seconds- and it's hard engough to walk thru the "aisles" without adding panic.

anyways- it was one of those things where it wasn't obvious. Just labeled rayon. I was suspicious but like I said- didn't do a burn to confirm till after. I only buy natural fiber fabrics- and for the most part- pay thru the nose to get PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabrics. I had a silk that fooled me once too- though I didn't dye it. It was so cheap I grabbed 10 yards, took it home, singed the edge and promptly added it to the "costume fabric" bin. haha.

I just wanted people to be aware that not all rayon is truly rayon. ;-)

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

Did anyone notice that Joann rarely carries rayon anymore. Thats very frustrating and makes me wonder why.
I thought it was perhaps because it's just a little tricky to sew, shrinks and reshrinks and grows too when hanging in the closet for too long!

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

According to the CPSIA website - thread is alright to use as long as it is not the metallic thread.

http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/manufacturers.html#q4
Dyed or undyed textiles (cotton, wool, hemp, nylon, etc.), including children’s fabric products, such as baby blankets, and non-metallic thread and trim. This does not include products that have rhinestones or other ornaments that may contain lead or that have fasteners with possible lead content (such as buttons, metal snaps, zippers or grommets).

"dollsbybarbie says:

As a trimmings seller I would like to give a little more info on this subject and correct some ignorance about different threads.
Metallic appearance threads used in Jacquard and some brocade trimmings are made of lurex and other similar filaments. These are 59% nylon/41% polyester. They do not contain metals.

So shiny Lurex trimmings are still OK as they are polyester blends as most fabrics.

Re: polyester/synthetic fabrics?

You can get ecofleece which is made from soda bottles but its a bit pricey.
YOu can use anti pill fleece from "the big J" (j-j-j-j-oooannnnnnn argh!)
How about 100% cotton flannel?
Or 100% cotton terrycloth?
Or even cotton velvet?

I hate using fake fur, it really irritates my nose and so probably isnt good for babies.
You can get 100% wool for stuffing too which is super nice!
