onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

Hi,
Do you think that would be a good idea to put two little pieces of velcro instead of the snaps in the onesies?..
The ones I currently sell are safe (nickel free) but I know I'll need a certificate of testing so I'll have it available in case any seller will need it to comply with the ridiculous CPSIA law...
For everyone who works embellishing onesies or have babies..do you think that it would be a good idea?

Velcro wouldn't hold for my babies, they move too much...

I don't think velcro would work unless it was heavy duty and then it would be uncomfy for little ones.

I'm not wild about velcro. It catches in the wash to all of the other clothes so I try to avoid it if possible.

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

Does this whole CPSIA law make it harder for US buyers? Is a US customer going to be hugely concerned as to whether or not your product complies with the new laws?

I ask as onesies are something I was thinking about giving a go but it looks like readytoembroider is anticipating issues?? (Cool shop btw!)

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

Technically, the manufacturers shouldn't be able to sell you onesies that don't have compliant snaps, but there are a few brands that have already done testing to certify their snaps are lead-free (ex: Rabbit Skins).

On the velcro end, they DO make snag-free Velcro. I does not catch everything else in the wash like regular velcro, it is also not as scratchy as regular Velcro. That said, I probably still wouldn't put it on a onesie...

I have a onsie shirt with velcro. It is adorable but we never use it. It always comes undone.

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

Go into Target or Walmart and see which brand of Onesies they are selling. These two stores CLAIM that they are only stocking CPSIA compliant children's wear and toys on their shelves. Then contact those manufacturers and see if you can get the testing documentation for the Onesies - they should be testing already if they are selling to these stores.

Of course, unless component testing and pre-tested materials are going to be permitted in any new CPSIA revision bill, this all means nothing come 2/10/10.

You'd still need a certificate for hook and loop fastener too. I know that VelcroTM can supply a GCC, but not sure of other manufacturers.

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

Thanks all for your answers... I will elimate the velcro from my mind.I will give it more thoughts about another options to put instead of the snaps or I'd have to ask to the manufactur to do the test though...just to obtain the certification..I know the snaps are nickel-free, lead-free but I am sure some sellers may ask me for a copy of the certification...(this law is so ridiculous...I have never seen my kids or any other kid put a snap in the mouth..)

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

I'm a mom and I could care less about whats a snap or a button... I think this whole law is a joke... It's like somehow some law maker decided that parents are stupid and they need to baby proof everything for us. How bout making sure that plastic toys which we were told were safe, are safe you know the kind kids put in their mouth 85 times a day and stop worrying about stupid crap like the 3 centimeter snap on a shirt or a bracelet!!! I'm sorry but this law is really ticking me off. I'm done now. :)

I'm not too hip on velcro either. They attract hair and lint in the wash and ends up not sticking so well together plus if you don't get them aligned perfectly, they'll rub on the babies skin. OUCH!

As a customer of yours, who is absolutely in loooove with your onesie/shirt quality, it would make my cry to have you put velcro instead!

Just wanted to let you know, that while I wouldn't be a big fan of Velcro on onsies, you could use Aplix, which is MUCH stronger than velcro, and you can get the certificate saying it is lead and phalate free.

Ditto on that Sunflower, I survived, my kids survived thru the 90's. I thought everything was supersafe then. God I never knew how paranoid this country could get.

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

OK, I've been away from Etsy lately while juggling the rest of my life, and maybe something has changed, but....

....even though I can only (theoretically) PURCHASE certified lead-free onesies from, say, Target, the moment I alter them in any way (in my case by dyeing, but embroidery would be similar), I become a manufacturer myself and am liable for the testing all over again, even though I haven't added any lead to lead-free items. The presence of the snaps themselves leaves the onesies off the "exempt" list since they're no long exclusively fabric.

I'm leaving my onesies in my shop (the ones that haven't gone to consignment, anyway) because I'm confident that anyone testing them won't find lead b/c they already ARE lead-free (or the store where I purchased them in is deep doo-doo!), although I've taken anything embellished with fabric paint OUT of my shop; I don't know the phthalate content of the fabric paint and I can't afford to get it tested. :-(

Re: onesies-velcro-CPSIA...need feedback please!

See, this is the problem:

I know there's no lead in an already tested onsie.
You know there's no lead in an already tested onsie.
THEY know there's no lead in an already tested onsie...

BUT - add a snap, ribbon, thread, even one little bity french knot, and now there could be lead. I don't mean to make light of this issue, but it is hitting us itty bitty people hard. I believe the most of us would love to comply with these new laws, but how in the world are we supposed to afford a test on every single item we make?
