lead in metal buttons?

Hopefully I'm not asking a question that's already been asked a gazillion times~ did a search and didn't find anything.

I sell buttons, vintage and modern, but am worried about selling metal buttons in case they contain lead. (I sell the buttons as supplies.)

I also did a few internet searches, but haven't found anything about recalls, etc.

Has anyone heard of metal buttons containing lead?

Thank you!

Re: lead in metal buttons?

Sew Merry, You are marketing your buttons as supplies, therefore you are not required to test. It is the manufacturer that must test, so anyone that buys your buttons and uses then on clothing designed for children 12 and under must be compliant. Yes, vintage metal buttons may possiblly contain lead, either in the metal, or if they are painted, in the paint. Generally, I don't think most sewers of chldren's clothing are buying vintage metal buttons for their designs to sell. And touching a metal button, even in the slight chance that it contains lead hurt you.

Re: lead in metal buttons?

Thanks, Faye. Maybe I should have posted my question in a different part of the forums. I'm not worried about it so much from a CPSIA standpoint, but I don't want to be sending something that might contain lead into someone's home, especially if they have kids. My kids like to help me sort buttons, and then I started worrying about they metal ones.
