labeling question

I think I've got the CPSIA stuff under control, but I'm hoping that someone can answer a question about FTC labels. I understand that I need put my shop name and my location, the fiber content, and care instructions if I decide to include them (it's a hat/crown, so is exempt from care instructions as I understand it), but here's where I run into problems:

I make crowns that are of mixed fibers. Some are 100% cotton, some are cotton and wool blend felt, some are all wool blend felt. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as ordering three types of tags due to the fiber content in the wool blend felt. Some colors are 20% wool/80% rayon and some are 35% wool and 65% rayon. This produces infinite possibilities for labeling.

I have been reading the "Threading your way" article, but I can't find anything that addresses this and I'm concerned that it's because I absolutely must state the entire thing, and it would be impossible to order them. I've been writing them out so far, but I know I need to get the real deal.

Does anybody know a way around this? I think the crowns are large enough that attaching the label to the crown is a must, so printing them out on the packaging is not an option.

Re: labeling question

Ok, it looks like printing my own labels is my best option. I'll buy the sew in cotton kind to avoid any questions about what materials were used. Does anyone know about the ink in inkjet printers?

Re: labeling question

Inkjet printer ink is exempt from testing. Laser printer ink is not.

Have you looked at NWTag.com? They may have little stock labels with content that may work for you.

Re: labeling question

Awesome! Thank you. I am going to go out and get an inkjet (I have a laser right now). I have looked at that website and the problem is that I probably have at least ten different types of labels that I would need to order just right off the bat, and then if someone asks for a different color combo it might require a different label. So I think doing my own is the way to go. Thanks again!

Re: labeling question

Beverly: Can you provide a link to the tags you actually buy. This is a bit confusing. The care label tags are made of polyester. Is that allowed? Sorry for all the questions.

Re: labeling question

Polyester is exempt from testing.

Actually, I just placed an order for CPSIA labels printed on Kona cotton from Spoonflower.com 1 yard printed with my labels was $18 including shipping. I designed them with floral motifs in the corners and required info in the middle I left 1/4 " on each side for sewing them on. I changed the dating up a little to 1415SSFW1617. They will last 4 years, and i can reorder anytime . I will get 312 labels for the $18 and they are totally custom. It will take 15 days plus shipping time. About the same as ordering them from overseas. Spoonflower is in NC.

Re: labeling question

Hats are not considered wearing apparel so i don't think crowns would be either. You will probably be fine with a basic label and tracking information. You could place your fiber content information on a secure rather than permanent tag, a hang tag attached with a ribbon or twine. You could have a basic hang tag and print fiber variations on labels, which could then be affixed to the hang tag.
