they really need to listen. unneeded testing on items that don't contain lead, as a rule is more than expensive, it's excessive regulation based on fear and paranoia.

excessive regulation.

I guess I am not understanding why you think this is helpful? The letter was written last December and the suggestions don't seem to have been taken. Is there more info on this?

This is what pisses me off about this law.... In the letter, it states that Henry Poole made a presentation in May 2008 to the commission about the fact that textiles contain NO or TRACE amounts of lead. Yet they drafted up and passed this legislation anyway.

The letter is from associations to Nord and Moore. They are asking CPSIA to take this information into concideration. It not saying that the CPSIA is going along with what is in the letter.

I am glad they wrote it and hope CPSIA takes it into concideration.

I don't understand how this letter means that we are "safe till August."

Re: a letter for yarns, threads, material this can keep us open till august

what it is stating is that they dont contain lead - and for now we can use that for those who use yarns, and threads and other textiles as our testing - if the manufactures test and state that they dont have lead we can use that till august of 2009,

with what they say i feel better about selling till august, and it wont cost me any money, and we have 7 months to keep hounding the media, congress, senators, anyone who will listen.

as for the letter being written in last december, this law was signed i believe last june (bush) and that is why obama stated that he wanted no laws to be signed from june on and they signed it anyway that is why he wants all that was signed by june on to be reviewed.

that is why it is important to send letters to him, the senators to enlighten them on what they voted for, they dont realize what they voted for, they just all agreed to get the hell out of their and start their vacation(that was in december of 2007) and it was signed june 2008.

ooooooooooooo I didn't know that about Obama wanting all laws passed after June to be reviewed. That is good info!

My daughter's class (preschool) wrote letters the new president with questions or comments. My daughter asked 'Why can't my mom make her play food anymore?' I wish I had known before they went out because I would have slipped some additional info in there! :o)

Re: a letter for yarns, threads, material this can keep us open till august

I am definitely marking. It sounds (to me, anyway) like someone at the CPSC, supported and informed by the various associations at the bottom, asked Nancy Nord to exempt fabrics, pretty much. It does NOT sound like it's "official," by any means, since it's written TO her to consider this, but still, DEFINITELY a step in the right direction!!!

Now, I do hope that those making children's items out of, say, wood, or paper have someone covering their backs in the same way, and that we can get this ironed out ASAP.

Re: a letter for yarns, threads, material this can keep us open till august

well with the letter to nancy nord - with them saying their yarns are ok to use we are good till august being they have tested for us and our responbility is to make sure at this time their is no lead and they state it in the letter. so hopefully with our letters and emails and we have to i believe in every state let our local tv stations know what is going on b/c more media knows what is going on the better for us.

as for the wood - i think they should contact the woodworkers unions - if they have to use the wood for flooring they have to prove that it is ok for young kids to be around.

this is so crazy and what a waste of our time b/c they are such idiots not to listen to what others have to say.

oh well- then there is good or better news for me here...
I wasn't sure that the laws that Obama froze the other day-didn't know the CPSIA law was one of them.
If that's true...
it's heartening...

Re: a letter for yarns, threads, material this can keep us open till august

If I understand correctly - and I may be totally off-base - what Obama was able to sign was a suspension of regulations, but not laws, so I believe the CPSIA has not been affected in any way by whatever he signed.

Re: a letter for yarns, threads, material this can keep us open till august

This letter was written before CPSC presented its proposal to exempt natural fibers BUT they did not include any fabrics with dyes or treatments. This is still just a proposal and does not help in any way unless you grow your own fiber, spin it and weave it into your own cloth, because all fabric sold on the bolt has been treated in some way - even if it is just sizing that is added to a naturally colored weave. And that knocks the fabric right back into requiring testing.

They only paid attention to part of this letter - and never considered the part about treated and dyed fabrics being just as safe.

:::sigh::: They always seem to go along with bits and pieces of what we're asking for but not the whole thing, don't they PP? Very frustrating. Almost as if they're deliberately making things hard for us.

Re: a letter for yarns, threads, material this can keep us open till august

its labeled under Third -

they have done the testing for us and we are good to go till august, it is all textiles and not limited to - and he names a few fabrics.

this is wonderful news, and it is in the right direction. they as companies are going to loose a lot of money, and when you hit them in the pocket you hit them in the heart. they will fight and that is good for us.

i think it would also be a good idea to put a link of that letter into your store for those who are miserable and want to cause a problem. i have read posts that others have said that they have heard that on feb 10, other stores who are "bitter" b/c they are closing their store will try and cause some problems. if you have a link to this letter i think it would maybe have them back off - like we dont have enough to fight we have to fight others who are bitter.

OK, so if the CPSC goes along with this, where does that leave anyone who makes fabric things with metal fasteners Onesies, for example.
