ZIPPER QUESTION

I know there is a post on here about zippers but I had a question. I saw a post on here but cant find it about joanns selling only cpsia compliant stuff. So if I buy a zipper at joanns am I fine?
or does anyone have a place to buy them? I went to where it was suggested here but they have them in bulk.

Re: ZIPPER QUESTION

No way does Joanns sell only cpsia compliant stuff. Some of their fabric they will be able to tell you is compliant, but just walk down the beading aisle!

Re: ZIPPER QUESTION

I think their 'official' statement is that they are selling only children's products that are CPSIA compliant. But it's only products that are specifically geared toward children, like licensed baby fabrics, etc. If I buy a button and putting it into a dress for a baby, it probably isn't CPSIA compliant because buttons usually say 'not intended for children under 12. As for zippers, I read that YKK is compliant somewhere in a forum. I'm sure like Helene said if you plug in zipper and CPSIA into the search it should come up with some.

Re: ZIPPER QUESTION

Let us know what you hear from Coats & Clark. I think many of us would like to know if they are in fact testing their zippers and are willing to send us copies of their testing. Thanks

Re: ZIPPER QUESTION

THIS WAS FROM COATS

Dear Mrs. maxson:

Thank you for your recent inquiry. We are always eager to hear from people who use our products.

There is a great deal of confusion regarding the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). Coats & Clark, along with others in the industry, has petitioned the Consumer Product Safety Council(CPSC) with a view to getting textile products (specifically fabric, yarns, threads and zippers) exempted from the CPSIA. The CPSC is currently considering these claims and will hopefully reach a decision – exempting textiles from the need to test – soon. However, as their decision will only come out after the original deadline of February 10th, 2009 by which everyone was supposed to be compliant, the CPSC has granted a stay for one year of this enforcement deadline. This is not to say that the Commission has reversed its decision to apply tougher limits on the lead content of children’s products – this will still go through – but there is more time now for clarification.

In the interim, be assured our threads, zippers and yarns meet the CPSIA’s requirements and comply with the lead content levels and phthalate ban. This information is derived from our raw material suppliers who meet international standards for textile chemical compliance. We further verify this through in-house and third party testing.

In order to answer your question regarding zippers, we will need to know the which style, length and color of zipper you are using. On the package beneath the bar code is a line of information beginning with the letter 'F'. This line provides the style, length and color.

We will update you as developments emerge.
Sincerely,

Lynn L. Browne

Re: ZIPPER QUESTION

zipperstop.com has YKK zippers and they do test the zippers and you can buy as many or as little as you want they are just cheaper the more you buy and they will still be less than what you would pay at Joanns and they will email you a testing letter also.

Re: ZIPPER QUESTION

Why do I find it so annoying that anything, and I mean anything, has to be tested. Dear manufacturer. If you know your product contains harmful substances, stop making it. We will stop buying it. And thus, no need for testing as a third party event. I would think it wise for a manufacturer to test their materials prior to manufacturing. Why is the burden falling on us? Why does a particular item, be it a zipper or button, have to be tested repeatedly by many customers at a huge overall expense to the handmade creating world. One zipper, tested over and over and over all across the country to meet CPSC standards. Stupid? Annoying? No common sense? Yes, yes, and yes! It should be tested once - by the manufacturer at the materials level. Not us, for any reason!
