Dear Mrs. maxson:
Thank you for your recent inquiry. We are always eager to hear from people who use our products.
There is a great deal of confusion regarding the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). Coats & Clark, along with others in the industry, has petitioned the Consumer Product Safety Council(CPSC) with a view to getting textile products (specifically fabric, yarns, threads and zippers) exempted from the CPSIA. The CPSC is currently considering these claims and will hopefully reach a decision – exempting textiles from the need to test – soon. However, as their decision will only come out after the original deadline of February 10th, 2009 by which everyone was supposed to be compliant, the CPSC has granted a stay for one year of this enforcement deadline. This is not to say that the Commission has reversed its decision to apply tougher limits on the lead content of children’s products – this will still go through – but there is more time now for clarification.
In the interim, be assured our threads, zippers and yarns meet the CPSIA’s requirements and comply with the lead content levels and phthalate ban. This information is derived from our raw material suppliers who meet international standards for textile chemical compliance. We further verify this through in-house and third party testing.
In order to answer your question regarding zippers, we will need to know the which style, length and color of zipper you are using. On the package beneath the bar code is a line of information beginning with the letter 'F'. This line provides the style, length and color.
We will update you as developments emerge.
Sincerely,
Lynn L. Browne
