Yarn question

I'm interested in purchasing 100% organic cotton yarn from Peru. Because my potential supplier buys directly from farmers in Peru, they obviously don't go through the testing that commercial yarn does in the US. Does this mean I would have to do my own testing for this yarn before using it on baby hats?

Re: Yarn question

I think that yarn, and specifically 100% cotton yarn, is exempt from lead testing - here's the link to the regulation:

But I'm new at this so I'm not sure if I'm understanding everything right yet. Hopefully someone more experienced can confirm?

Re: Yarn question

Thank you! I think everyone has that initial PANIC of "what do it do??" then it settles down. I was able to create an account and get a small batch manufacturer number in minutes-- at least I think I'm done with that process. :)

I ordered my labels from another Etsy store, so now I just have to wait and attach those to my hats. Good luck to you in this process!

Re: Yarn question

Claire, the yarn itself is exempt. My only concern is that the dye if any was lead free. Modern dye techniques used in yarn sold and used commercially is safe. You need to do some research on this me thinks. Who is doing the dye process?

Re: Yarn question

The farmers themselves dye the yarn, I believe. This supplier buys it dyed in Peru from locals. I will also check with him.
