YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

Hey folks, I just finished up another batch of testing for various stores here on Etsy and decided to test my new YUDU screen printing inks (before I start printing tees for kids) and they are 700ppm - 800ppm! I'm glad I tested them before making up some tees! Does anyone know about Speedball inks?

No way!

So that means they can't be used for kids items that you plan to sell, right?

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

There are other threads here about the Yudu. Maybe you should post your results there so people are aware. I imagine that there are sellers that planned to make kids items with the system.

Thanks for posting this warning.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

Smartmama tested some and was posting on twitter. I don't think she knew what brand the inks were but certain colors tested higher.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

I had read somewhere that the Cricut which also uses ink was made by the same company as the YUDU screen printing ink. I am wondering if anyone has tested the ink used in the cricut machine.

I was wanting to buy it real soon, but I may have to put it off till I know if the ink passes the CPSIA lead standards.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

calm down.....it's ok... : ) lol

You can use other "WATER BASED SCREEN PRINTING INKS"

Go to http://www.dickblick.com/

…..look under "screen printing"...then inks........then scroll down to “Textile Inks”
you will see...
Jacquard
Versatex
Permaset Aqua
Among others.
...you can use these just fine…..just remember to pick “water-based for fabrics”…NOT plastisol inks.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

Thanks CBacon - do these work okay with the YUDU machine? They say to use their inks..... I know how it works usually, 'only use ours' means we don't want to lose sales on inks.....

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

I checked out the machine and online demo the other day and they show the effects of using other inks and it ruins the screen.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

I found out from reading that the OLD version of Kato polyclay (the 3 oz pkgs, not 2 oz) were reformulated and the OLD version contains phthalates (the new version does not). I still have some old clay that I can't really do anything with.

It's kinda scary how much stuff DOES contain lead and phthalates.

HeyChica - that might be a marketing ploy to sell more product - I'd only believe it if it's a known third party.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

That's too bad. Now that I know what you were talking about I thought that machine was really cool when I heard about it. It seemed like a good replacement for Gocco.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

Maybe I'm missing something but I just watched the demo on the yudu site, and it seems like more work and complicated than just making your own screens with emulsion, and exposing the old fashioned way.

I don't know how the accessories are priced or anything but it doesn't seem worth it to begin with.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

Our wal-mart in town changed up our craft section a couple of weeks ago. It got rid of all the fabrics (bummer) and now they sell the Cricut Expression for under $300.00 plus they have lots of extras sold separately, they also have a smaller version of the Cricut Expression for around $200.00.

I have also read that if you use different inks it could ruin the screen. I don't know anything about it, I haven't tried it yet, but I sure would like to. I just hate the thought of committing $300.00 to something thing and then find out that it will limit my uses because of lead in the ink.

Re: YUDU screen printing ink contains lead

For kids clothing www.dharmatrading.com has LOTS of nontoxic fabric inks and paints. They list in the item descriptions which are nontoxic, etc.
