Wood products?

What about dowel rods? Are those exempt from CPSIA? I contacted the company of the dowel rods I've been using. Their label said "great for schools" as well as "children should use this product under adult supervision". Since these are for kids, I assumed they would be certified; however, after emailing the company, I found out that they are NOT certified. Can I still use these dowel rods? How do you get away with the labeling on the product? My understanding of the law is that anything that could be considered for children under the age of 13 HAS to be certified.

Can anyone clarify? Help!!!

Re: Wood products?

unstained, unpainted in a natural state wood is exempt from testing. It is the surface coating that needs to be tested.

Re: Wood products?

You will need to double check, preferably in writing with the mill, that there have been no chemical treatments of any kind done to the wood. My son was using balsa and pine sheets in his HS architecture class and wondered what was causing a slight skin reaction. It took a while but we finial figured out that the wood the school was using had some sort of adhesive agent impregnated in the wood to reduce warping, splintering, and splitting. Whatever the mill treated the wood with did not alter it's appearance in any way from the untreated wood he uses at home for his modeling projects.

Re: Wood products?

Oh guys,
I'm new to this team and will be posting up my billions of questions soon.. but since this one closely relates.... what if the coating is already food safe? I use a beeswax and mineral oil finish on my wooden toys.. is this exempt or no?

Cheers
