Who all will this affect?

Reading all the posts on this topic and many other regular posts on hows and why this and that here on ETSY has brought me to feel I need to make a blog. I resisted making one for a long time thinking I'm so much older than many, and that blogging is for those much younger than I.

I got to thinking I have grown kids so I don't have to worry about this CPSIA thing but then reality hit home...

I have friends who have kids. It will affect them because some have young ones and do buy or create home made.

The corner stores all have crafty things in them. This will also affect the mom and pop stores that carry these type of items so in essence that can of Campbells Soup you just bought from the neighborhood quickie store may cost you more to help make up that difference the store now loses since it lost items that did not fall under CPSIA Standards.

From what I gather its even affecting our libraries as well ridding the shelves of the books I grew up with saying how they may be harmful to a child. (I read them though and no problems)

What other ways could this affect people who do not have young children in general?

I do know those larger stores will have to find a way to replace lost revenue to just stay open.

I would love to share your replies and ideas on my new blog

Re: Who all will this affect?

How will it affect people who don't have kids?

1) taxes, you'll pay more because schools and libraries will have to test everything that the kids come into contact with.

2) crime: families that can't afford a new winter coat for the growing kids won't be able to get one at Salvation Army / Goodwill... very poor families won't be able to get coats from Coats for kids unless those coats have been tested.

3) environmental issues: a great deal of stock will become a hot-potato and end up in land fills. Stock that for the most part is safe, will be dumped.

4) Prices for Childrens items go up, leading to:

5)Prices for EVERYTHING will go up: families will buy less, if they need $$ to buy necessities for kids, they will cut corners on other things. Fewer trips to community events, fewer restaurant meals, fewer trips to anything (gas vs clothes for baby...), buying less clothing, cosmetics, etc to be able to have $$ available to buy things the kids need.

6) unemployment will go up: home workers now looking for outside work, but also, as people use less, buy less, go out less, there will be less money going out to pay people to do jobs that people can do without.

7) people who had been self employed at home, are now applying for energy assistance, food stamps, AFDC.

8) People who would have gotten help from Salvation Army and Goodwill and similar agencies might be on their own, as many of these agencies rely on resale shops to support their programs. Top selling items in these resale shops are kids clothes, with toys and books for kids close behind.

Re: Who all will this affect?

disclaimer will not work... if the item would APPEAL to a child 12 and under, it will be considered "for children".

Re: Who all will this affect?

I think Trinlay did a great job a laying out a lot of the people who are going to be affected by this.

And think of all those items you'll not be able to purchase for future grandchildren!

Re: Who all will this affect?

I'm almost due for grandkids, any day now I could hear of a pregnancy. I think that we are in a symbiotic world. Even if I did not have kids grown or otherwise, I would still support educating kids properly.IMHO ,they are the workforce of the future. They will make or break the economy that I will depend on to help me when I get old.It is in my best interest to look out for them.

trinlayk says:

Well that's ridiculous, guns appeal to some children under 12 too but that doesn't mean they should be given to them.

Re: Who all will this affect?

Blondheart, that's exactly the problem!
85-90% or more of the "art toys" I make end up in the hands of teens and adult collectors. Out of over 300 items sold over 5 years (I haven't kept a great tally...)
Only about 6 kids have ended up as the end users of my work, usually as a special order from a parent or grandparent, with that adult involved in selecting materials. ..

HOWEVER, my items are generally cute...so I'm out of luck in regards to CPSIA.

I can't afford testing, and I can't afford to close my shop. I rely on the income from my plushies...

No matter what I do in regards to CPSIA, I don't win.
Considering the sources of my materials, I've got a reasonable expectation that my finished items are safe in regards to lead and phylates.

Re: Who all will this affect?

berkanas, it's not specifically "schools and libraries" but anyone who "distributes" items to children under 12.
Even if the kids are only "renting" the books, the books and other items are technically distributed/disbursed to them for the school year.

Re: Who all will this affect?

So basically schools may have to get rid of all their books the students use unless they have them tested as well as libraries? Isn't this pretty much an impossible task having all school books tested? This includes books, paints and clothing as well as material too so aprons the kids may wear while painting or on the chalkboard and the finger paints they would use as well?

Re: Who all will this affect?

That really sucks Trin, it sounds like I might be in the same boat. But what I make has never been child safe. The minute you put glass eyes on something it doesn't meet the child safety laws anyway. I have never sold any bears for children in 28 years.

Re: Who all will this affect?

yep, most of the art supplies might be exceptions since they're already AP approved.

one book out of each "class" (1 book out of each edition used by the school) will have to be tested. desks, black boards, paint on the walls, (probably not the chalk, that's probably AP oked)... cleaning supplies that might leave residue or come into contact with the kids...

Yeah, heaven help them, the librarians are fired up!

Re: Who all will this affect?

ok after spending a lot of time reading all these posts I am still confused. I make jewellery and knits for adults. But the wording includes the words clothing and jewelry and says anything a child under 12 might come in contact with. Does that mean even if an adult is wearing it???!! Does this just apply to jewelry and clothes made specifically for children? Jeez I feel ignorant.

Re: Who all will this affect?

My husband and I spoke about this. What if it is marketed for teens and adults only, but can be used by a child too? I am wondering if anyone has an answer for what we can do. I believe that integrity and honesty should prevail, but what can a small biz do?
