Where do you go to have things tested?

I live in a really small town and have no idea where to go to have my merchandise tested. This whole CPSIA thing is too much! I can understand about toys (I won't let my baby put anything metal or plastic in his mouth) but buttons, snaps, ribbon- It seems allitle overboard!
Does anybody know how much this testing costs?

Re: Where do you go to have things tested?

Go to the CPSC website - cpsc.gov and look for the list of approved third party laboratories for testing for CPSIA. Testing is expensive. Testing get into the thousands for a single item - the test is done on the item as a whole and it is a destructive test so you will not get your testing sample back. Change any component on the item or start a new lot of components - for example you start a new package of snaps - now you have to have that item with the new snaps tested all over again. While they have talked about component testing, it has not been approved yet. And then the terms of component testing have not yet been made clear as to what is being considered including allowing the manufacturer's testing to be acceptable for the final item made.

There are few labs in the US on the list as most are in Asia to make it easy for the big manufacturers.

How can anyone do this- There is no possible way for a small bussiness to live up to these requirements. Is there anything oout there trying to stop this new law or whatever it is?

You can vote at the next election and study up on your candidates. Waxman, Reid and Pelosi are among a some of those who really pushed this law into existence without real thought as to the "unintended consequences."

Re: Where do you go to have things tested?

It's insane. For the amount of money I put out on a quarterly basis to have my skin care product ingredients tested for impurities and to check the proper grade, I could've paid off my mortgage last year. I couldn't imagine what it would cost to have beads, buttons and snaps tested :(
Props to you for being concerned. It's a scary world out there when you actually find out what some of the most common things you use everyday are made of.
Most people already have over 400 chemicals circulating their blood before breakfast!

The law is passed; it is not up for a general populous vote.

I think what Lovejoy means is that you can vote for a candidate who listens to your concerns and understands that the CPSIA needs reform the next time a voting opportunity arises. If you don't know where your representatives (or candidates) stand, write to them and find out. At the very least, we need to get the people who pushed this law without thoroughly considering the consequences out of office.

Re: Where do you go to have things tested?

i design jewelry for both adults and children. however, due to these new rules i have not posted any jewelry to sell. so let me see if i have this right... every single individual childrens design i create needs to be tested? and then every single time i re-order supplies (despite it being the same exact item) it then needs to be re-tested?

i am sorry but this is absurd. upon reading all of these posts i had thought ok, i will send off my items to be tested. but after reading a previous post stating it could cost me thousands - how are we supposed to afford this? while i could see a need for certain items needing to be tested, a line needs to be drawn! perhaps asking the major manufacturers to test their items would somehow make more sense. there is such a thing called - common sense. if something looks questionable to a parent in terms of quality or safety, why would you give it to your child? i am sorry to vent it is just that my head is spinning after reading all of this legal mumbo jumbo and then further reading post after post after post.

i fear that every etsy seller whose product *may* even come into possible contact with a child under the age of 14 is having a panic attack right about now...
