What the heck happened?

I have been away from the etsy community for a couple of weeks...I come back and find a new forum titled "CPSIA"....and now fellow etsians speaking of closing shops due to inabilty to comply with the act, specifically shops who care items for children. For our own protection should we start putting on our website, "not intended for children under the age of 12" to cover ourselves? What the heck happened while I was gone? Any links?

Re: What the heck happened?

Very long story...Basically, the CPSC has new laws affecting all products made for children 12 & under. Products are now required to undergo lead and, possibly, phthalate testing...very expensive and nearly impossible for most of us. Even products are are proven to be made out of non-toxic materials must be tested. I could go on and on. Type in CPSC or CPSIA in the forum search and you will find tons of info.

Re: What the heck happened?

well? the law has been around since last august, but few realized it has implications for the little wee folk of etsy and similar until about a month and a half ago. we sniffed and researched and worried and the concern grew, and etsy responded with some great storque posts (check the "craftivism section, or storque search for CPSIA), and eventually gave us a dedicated section to discuss and work this out together.

rule number one:

don't panic.

:) ...but don't ignore, either.
