I'm writing from Spain and I'm astonished with this new law. Does it means that if I sell one of my girl's dresses it has to be labelled with all that information? Sometimes I use vintage fabrics or vintage buttons...
Actually I print labels on a inkjet transfer sheet, iron on white cotton and sew it to my clothes, but doing a different label for each item means hours of extra work. Your government makes very strange laws...
If an item from Canada is destined for the US then the same applies to that item.
Question???? (Waves hand madly) Will toilet paper manufacturers be labeling each sheet of toilet paper? Children might eat it and they do use it...lots of it! what about wet wipes? How will they label those?
Okay, I'm sure I will be flamed by 1 or 2 for this, but really many asked for this law. When we elect people that have no core values, who are swayed by the vocal groups who are padding their war chests for reelection this is what we get. And when mommies and lawyers scream how we are allowing manufacturers to harm their children and the media grabs on to it and shouts "save the children", this is what we get. And when so many people think that the gov should solve all their problems and pay for what they can't afford but they want cradle to grave benefits, then this is what we get.
I got a card in the mail Monday from a group of lawyers, the blood sucker type, listing at least 60-80 companies ( many of them no longer in business) in this area, (and I live in an area incompassing 3 counties with maybe 200,000 people. They were soliciting all those people that worked in any of these companies, and their relatives, so they could file class action suits against companies that may have used or had asbestos in their plants or businesses. Well, prior to 1980, most buildings that anyone worked in, or shopped in, or lived in had asbestos. I mean life's a bitch and then you die.
If we are so concerned about lead poisoning, then instead of giving money to all these hairbrained "stimulus" ideas, then maybe the "stimulus" money should be going to give grants to people with older houses to replace the pipes that are leaching lead into the water that the kids are drinking rather than worrying about the 2 buttons that are holding up the shoulder straps on a little girls jumper, or the zipper on a 12 yo's jeans.
Sorry for the rant. I've had enough of this government. I never thought I'd say it, but I'm getting a gun and plenty of bullets. I'm sure that before not too long, we won't be allowed to have them. God knows, when you have a government that tells you bicycles are going to kill your children, and zippers on the back of a dress cause brain damage, then you really have to wonder what is really the agenda!
Ok for the fabric labels I make wooden toys can I write on the toy the batch number and all the garbage the is required. Also who is to know that when we change batch numbers or change materials we cant just keep the same number going claiming that we make a large batch of these products. There seems to be ways that one can get around with the whole labeling issues. As long as the tag is on it who is going to look any further. Much of the public either dont know or dont care about all of this. Fayemalonedesigns I agree with you.
RMD wood products without paint is okay. When you apply something to the wood I think this would then apply to you. BTW Your items are awesome! You could wood burn the info on the bottom and that would be permanent!
RMD - here is the absurdity of the law. You are making wooden toys. Obviously, one wood board makes so many toys. Now, you go and grab the next board in the stack to make the next X number of toys. Taking that next board is actually creating the next Lot. Now with the next Lot you need different testing(when testing comes back into the picture) and a different lot number on the label. Each new board = a new lot. Absurd? Of course - the whole law as written is absurd. Do people care? No. Does that mean anything? No, because your State Attorney General and the CPSC care.
The exemptions are not permanent. Testing requirements will become a reality in 2/10. Labeling is a reality in 8/09. The new members that will be appointed to CPSC want the law followed as written. All exemptions will be gone. Full testing will be required.
I was speaking with two attorneys this evening. One knew about CPSIA because I told him about it back in February. The other attorney never heard of it.
The only way to fix this is to call, write, and email your congressman and senators. Do I sound like a broken record? Well, if this gets the pressure back up in Washington and the proposed change bills in Congress get passed you will thank me. But right now, those Bills will die in committee because that is what certain big wigs want.
RMD here is a link for you to check out that pertain to yo0ur products. Check out table A for the paint and Table B for the wood. Wood does not need to be tested!
So does this only pretain to only childrens items. I design Copper Yard Art. It will be to expensive and time consuming for some crafters to label everything they might as well give up this job.
This only hurts those that make items for children, and those that wish to purchase wonderful handcrafted items for their children! To purchase handmade items that are carefully handcrafted just for your child or grandchild may become a thing of the past unless you want to purchase items that look like these..... http://ravenwolfsden.blogspot.com/
"RavenWolfArt says: Question???? (Waves hand madly) Will toilet paper manufacturers be labeling each sheet of toilet paper? Children might eat it and they do use it...lots of it! what about wet wipes? How will they label those?"
OK!Then should all labels be in braille? OK CPSIA...we don't want to discriminate or leave any one out! So...should tagging include such info per your requirements be in braille, Spanish and English?
Pastperfect I also have called emailed written to all my congree and senators here in Western New York. Well, all but thrown myself in front of their feet. I have looked at the requirements that will make me compliant with this law but i will not be able to keep making wood horses basically they will become firewood in my shop wood stove I will have to start over like many other toymakers. Thanks RavenWolfArt gotta love the new fashion tags all the kids will be wearing!
Actually Raven, won't we have to include French with the Spanish and English? Nafta made it so that we have to have everything in all 3 languages, that's why the instuctions for anything are 30 pages long. And for those that don't speak any of those three, maybe pictographs?
I in still pretty new here, and after having read about the tag thing, I'm wondering what happens if you do comply? Are you thyen kicked off of etsy? Jan
Who's going to enforce these laws? Well we probably need a new Czar. Like a lead czar, or a child czar, or a handmade czar, Who the heck knows, this is how we are creating good jobs, who care that it is putting thousands out of their "good" jobs.
The CPSIA from what i understand is going to mazke it so that the state attorny general and the local district attornys offices will be the police. So if you are sitting at a craft show and see the patty wagon pull up to the curb you know they are coming. I live 2 hrs from Canada and I am looking into going there to sell my horses off once this virus takes full effect here in the states. I know about the passport issues. It will be customs that I think might be the problem. If I cant get there then I guess they may all become firewood for the woodstove in the next winter. Looks like we are all going to have children with dirty bottoms! Not going to be able to wipe after potty, the toilet paper may be contaminated with lead before it is contaminated with something much worse!!
I have not read all about the law just what I've seen here and a glimse of the rule about manufacters. Do they mean on the main product coming from manuf. or item coming from me or you . ex-- i buy charms that are non-lead use them in a neckl ace for preteens, How does the wholesale customer[me] know if the manuf. are being straight up or are they themselfs being checked on by the CPSIA?
How do I know whose hands my jewelry will end up in? Someone could buy a jewelry item as a gift for a child. Do we lock up parents for giving their children jewelry? Yikes.
