What about Liability?

Hi-- I am a new member on ETSY. I make plushies, bags,simple kids' dresses, etc. and would love to sell them in my own shop, but my significant other is opposed to it in case we get sued for liability ( if someone chokes on a part or whatever.) How do people deal with this issue? Private Insurance? Hope and a prayer? I am located in Ontario.

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated, a I am currently at a standstill, & questioning whether to continue or not.......!! Please Help! Thanks!

Not fun to think about--but there is always risk in every business. Insurance is always a good idea.

research your local toy safety laws & abide by them

take out product liablility insurance

if you are selling them at a craft fair or similar where the general public is around, you will need public liability insurance too

If you are a sole proprietorship in US and you are sued all of your personal assets (home etc) are attached... he has reason to be concerned. You may want to look into limited partnerships... different types have different sets of limitation. you still of course need to follow the laws no matter how you set up your licensing
