Want to call but I'm concerned I'll screw up!

I emailed my AGs office a week or so ago asking what their policy on the enforcement of CPSIA was, I got an email back today that they want me to call! I'm not very comfortable on the phone, worried I'll make an idiot of myself or something. For those of you who have called, how did you handle it?

Just sound confident - even if you are nervous. Why do they want you to call? Why can't they call you, I wonder?

Well, I agree - just sound confident and have specific questions. I made some suggested phone calls to the CSPSC, the Director of Commerce's office and hmmm... can't even remember the third (it was a few weeks ago). I have to warn you - they all acted like they didn't know what I was talking about and tried to pan me off on someone else. But, I hung up knowing that I was not by any means the only call they received on this topic - even if they weren't too responsive to me.

I don't know what to tell you, I didn't even get that far. This was the email response I got from mine.

"We appreciate your contacting the Attorney General’s Office. Please be advised we cannot assist you with your concerns. The primary purpose of this office is to represent the State of South Carolina in a legal capacity as chief prosecutor."

State AG's do not deal with federal law enforcement. that would be the federal district attorneys. This bill is so far down on their priorities list, you will meet with a very junior staffer at best, and will not change their plan to do nothing about enforcement anyway.
Your time is better spent contacting your US House of Rep. nearby constituent services office. they have staffers whose job it is to listen to you and make your concerns heard by the appropriate house committees.

Try and remember, it's just a person, with a job, that eats, and sleeps and goes to the bathroom just like you.

No worries, you will do fine. Write stuff down if it helps. Be confident!

State AGs have been deputized with the enforcement of this law (not a bill, as it was passed in '08).

RuthsCreations, I'm sure you'll do great! Like the other posters said, speak clearly and confidently. You may want to say that you are doing everything you can to comply in good faith with the CPSIA (so they don't think you're trying to skirt the law in any manner), but would like some guidance as to your particular state's take as to how active their role will be. Some (like CT) will be aggressive, while others (MI) will not be as active (unless there is a transgression).

Beachwalkphoto,

I live in South Carolina too (Greenville) and we contacted the Attorney General's office about 4 weeks ago, and they acted like they had never heard of the law, nor that the AG was deputized to enforce it.
