Testing/labeling = end of business

I have read through the posts and links on the testing/labeling law. I have just started my business at home and on Etsy. I make baby blankets and other sewn items. Unfortunately, I feel my business will have to be closed if how I read this is true. It is my understanding that even though some fabrics are exempt from the testing, that I will still have to label my products. Am I correct on this? If not, please steer me straight. I also understand it to mean on items that I make aimed for children under 12 (such as my blankets). So maybe I need to start making my blankets adult size to avoid this or will I still be required to label my blankets since they can be used on children even though I don't market it towards children? This is all so confusing...even after reading the guidelines.

Unfortunately, as I understand it, I will either need to make blankets, totes, etc. all meant for adult use, or close my business because I will not be able to afford to comply with the new law. Someone please tell me if I am not reading this correctly. It is a shame what our world has come to.
Thanks.

Re: Testing/labeling = end of business

I don't sell kids stuff so I don't have to worry, yet. I can just see this extending to everything in a few years. Crafters just can't test every item. I few for the day when polymer clay is outlawed. They already changed the formulas because of a tiny bit of phalates.
The cost of everything will multiply when this law is in place.

Re: Testing/labeling = end of business

Hi there,
The thing with this law is that if the item "is intended or appeals" to a child under twelve it falls under the law. The blankets you make will fall under the law if they would appeal to a child. Making them larger won't matter. They will have to be labeled as well. Just saying that your items are for adults doesn't matter either. Disclaimers won't work. It's truly a mess.

Yes it is a shame that we also will have to quit making rocking horses. Keep calling your congressmen. I called today to know which side my congressman is on with HR 4040. Remember all of them have to be re-elected to keep their positions. Stressing to them that WE pay their wages and THEY work for us. We must keep the pressure up on congress that we are not going to lay down and go away. Well if anything appeals to children we will have to ban toilet paper! It may be contaminated with lead before it is contaminated with somthing much worse!
