Switch plates.

I used to have a switch plate that I made for babies room. It was actually a pretty good seller.

I took it down when I got wind of the regulations for kids' stuff.

I only have the one switch plate that's for kids, so I don't want to read through everything...in a nutshell, do switch plates fall under these regulations?

Re: Switch plates.

Artwork mounted on the wall above a child's reach and not intended to be interacted with does NOT fall into the CPSIA rules.

Decorations (like growth charts) located at child-height and meant to be "used"/touched by a child DO fall into the CPSIA.

Not sure where the switch plates would fall, but I'd tend to think they'd be in the latter, under the CPSIA, as a child less than 12 would be using the switch.

Re: Switch plates.

I think, since they aren't intended for a child's use they are exempt.

Re: Switch plates.

Well, they will be used by children, 3 yr old's can turn a light switch off and on. Therefore they are interacting with it. I don't know too may 12 yr old's that call to mom and dad to turn their lights off and on. "Sarcasm" intended for the total stupidity of of much of this law.No wonder the economy is in the dumper when we have to be concerned if a light switch in a child's room is a child's product and needs $$$ testing. Perhaps, we should storm the homes of congresspersons, and do a home search of their children's possessions to see how many are deemed hazardous by their parent who voted for this law.

Re: Switch plates.

This whole thing seem silly. If the switch plate has a children's theme on it and it's obviously intended for the child's room, then it would likely fall under the CPSIA, correct.

The child would also have access to every switch plate in the house, which I would assume wouldn't fall under the CPSIA.

Am I understanding this right?

Re: Switch plates.

WallCakes, you got it! And the button on a girl's blouse needs testing, but the identical one on the mom's dress that the little girl is sucking on is okay and doesn't need testing. And even dumber, they were on the same card of buttons!!!

Re: Switch plates.

that sounds soooo ridiculous. Are we to assume that the child is going to be licking the switch plate or something? It doesn't seem fair to the crafters and artists on here...or anywhere. Especially if it is a best seller for you.

Re: Switch plates.

WallCakes, you seem to understand perfectly...how perfectly nutz this situation is!

Something else to consider about those switch plates: Would they be considered PRIMARILY for a child's use, as opposed to use by anyone? Even if they are intended for a child's room, I think you could make the argument that a light switch is not PRIMARILY intended for the child, so the plate would be for the "general audience". If true, then the CPSIA would not apply!

That's the same situation as those buttons you mention: testing not required by manufacturer because they could be used on anyone's garment. If, however, you use them on a child's shirt, they become CPSIA-related and must have test results.
