Starting out and throughly confused

I've tried reading through the CPSIA information but I don't understand it at all. It's very confusing language to me. I have a few different questions regarding different items and what exactly I need to do for each.

1. I currently make knitted items for adults and have just started selling knitted hats and earwarmers for children. Is there anything I need to do with these items for compliance? Are they exempt? Do I need to have labeling?

2. I'm wanting to expand and offer other children's accessories such as felt bows attached to nylon headbands (and eventually clips and hair ties), hand-dyed silk bows, fabric bows, and velvet bows. What do I need to do for these items?

I'm sorry for the vague questions. I just literally have zero idea of where to even start or what needs to be done for any of these items. I just started reading all of this yesterday so I'm very lost and confused lol.

Re: Starting out and throughly confused

Dixie, start at the Ombudsman post at the top of the discussions. You need to sign up as a Small Batch Manufacturer at Saferproducts.gov. Do this 2nd as you want to expend to other things for children. You limit yourself if you don't as you will need to send products off for testing . You will also need CPSIA labels for all of your products. Hats, and earwarmers and headbands that are large enough will all need the CPSIA labels sewn in to them. Small headbands and clips can have the information on cards attached to the items. Any metal supplies will need to have testing certificates of compliance either by the manufacturer of the supply if you are registered as a SBM or you will need to have then tested for lead. Same goes for buttons, pearls, other bling. You will need a record keeping system where you will log all of your supplies and cross reference them to the finished products
