Some products exempt from CPSIA

Has anyone else read this?
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=a0Xr2Iw1Vi_8&refer=us

Apparently cotton and wool are included in the exemption. I usually make all my hats using acrylic yarn, but i will be changing to cotton and wool yarns so I can still make and sell my hats. I will have to raise the price to cover the extra cost of the yarn, but I can stay open. This is such good news to me.

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

yes that has been passed around a lot so are consignment shops and thrift stores as long as they are not selling recalled items

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

We don't yet know whether of not the exemption is for all cotton and wool. The exemption that was voted on was written for only undyed, untreated cotton, which not many people actually use. The CPCS has not clarified if the vote was passed for a broader exemption yet...

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

as long as you know you are buying the yarn that doesn't have lead in it you should be fine though

Can yarn have lead in it, really? That surprises me, but maybe it shouldn't.

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

It doesn't. It's just ridiculousness. I tested some of my yarns yesterday with an XRF gun and they were all < 10 ppm.

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

LaurieRyan, resellers are not OK with reselling certain items, please read this....

Here is a link to what the OP is talking about (I think), please read all of it, it is not good news and does not let resellers off the hook IMO....

http://cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09086.html

This paragraph is the significant one as far as I am concerned, as a Vintage dealer there is no way I can be sure my products meet the new requirments.

"The new safety law does not require resellers to test children’s products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell children’s products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless they have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties."

And OP, those items are being "considered" by the CPSC for exemption but the woman who said they may be was the CPSC lawyer who just resigned.

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

This "exemption" is not THE LAW !!! This is a "Press Release" from the CPSC which doesn't overturn the law. In other words, this was the CPSC's way to shut the public up. Now more than ever, continue to FLOOD Washington & your state reps with calls, letters, emails etc...I'm the owner of a Gift Shop & A Children's Consignment shop. I also co-own a wholesale hairbow business. I've spent up to 6 hours everyday fighting the Government on this. Please ask your reps to NULLIFY this law & send it back to congress for realistic provisions !!!!

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

What concerns me is while cracking down in the U.S. , all the imports that come into the country to the millionth power via such places as Walmart but mostly the dollar stores. China, Asia, Mexico...

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

dedeetsyshop...you are correct if the law remains unchanged. Legally, you can't even throw it away b/c it's illegal to throw "hazardous waste" in the trash !

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

As a seller of vintage and antique toys I will not be able to sell any of them under this law, in fact somehow I am supposed to destroy all of them. As far as I can determine most antique shows, shops, and malls do not even know about this law.

Re: Some products exempt from CPSIA

dedeetsy, join the party -- we're all confused! :D I don't think anyone will be policing garage sales. And it looks as though thrift and secondhand stores are okay; of course, they have to exercise discretion in accepting goods that look as though they may contain lead (clothing should be okay). They won't have to test existing inventories. And, of course, they have to continue to look at the CPSC's recall list.

I sell on eBay and haven't heard a peep from them about this; perhaps they will just refer us to their own rules about selling illegal items.

Saying that they are "considering" some things for exemption does not mean they are exempt.
