Should we unlist all items that will apply from our shops??

Re: Should We??

Am I going to get in trouble if I have these untested items in my shop?

Re: Should We??

I think that'll vary from shop to shop and owner to owner.

I'll probably unlist the ones with, say, fabric paint, but leave the rest for the time being as I am confident (after finding MSDS sheets for my dyes) that cotton garments plus fiber-reactive dye are safe.

Anyone want some cute tie-dyed baby stuff with a bit of fabric paint on it? *grin*

Seriously, though, I'll also probably be looking into the fabric paint MSDS more as I enjoy using it to embellish from time to time and I want to be sure it's safe. If not, I'll live. :-)

Re: Should We??

What about other types of paint? Like on a toy box?

Re: Should We??

It's awful we even have to think about this...it just hurts my head.

I'm keeping everything as is.

Re: Should We??

I'm going to continue selling my letters. I feel certain that as long as your paints are non-toxic, lead free (which I'm sure they are) then you will be ok. Others may feel differently, but I'm comfortable with my decision. :)

Re: Should We??

I'm going to keep listing items, but I'll wonder about every button or other item I add to a garment. Hoping I can find a way to test to put my mind at ease without breaking the bank.

Re: Should We??

I think that a toy box, wall hanging, nursery lamp, etc should be fine. I am going to put some childrens items that kids don't hold, sleep with, etc. online. I will be taking down my animals.

Re: Should We??

I'm going to stay open. I'll probably put my overalls and Supersize Me Bibs into edit mode until I have certs of some sort for the snaps. I have no idea who made the elastic i use in the overalls... I just scrolled it off a big reel and the 100+ year old shop where I bought it is no longer in business.

I'm confident in it, though. I just want to have my snaps cleared.

Everything else is just fabric and organic batting - no paint, no plastics. It would be a stupid waste of money to destroy these one of a kind items just to prove the obvious. So I'm not going to do it.

Re: Should We??

Honestly, it's the labeling requirements that are irking me. I have no idea how to label a quilt or an apron without destroying the aesthetic. So stupid.

Re: Should We??

I'm going to use easy to remove labels. They are just to inform the customer. Most labels are a nuisance!

Re: Should We??

What will your labels say?

I'm considering 100% cotton for the aprons and bibs, but I have no idea what to label my quilts. They're vintage scrap - how the hell do I know what percentage total is poly or poly blend or rayon or... jeez!

Re: Should We??

Lizzypops, with the wide variety of fabrics available, it is nearly impossible to identify the exact fiber content like it was prior to all the synthetics that are currently on the market. Unless you know for certain (you have the info. from the bolt) you will have to decide what to include on your labels.

You could do some burn testing yourself. Synthetics tend to burn more quickly. Pure cotton burns with a steady yellow flame and leaves a little gray ash and smells like burning paper.

Re: Should We??

Well, I know for certain that great-grandma's quilt tops were made with scraps from clothing. There's polyester, probably some rayon and ramie and ... yeah. Nature of the beast, you know?

Everything else is 100% cotton.

Maybe "Binding, backing and batting, 100% cotton; quilt top, 100% vintage handmedown."

That will have to do, I suppose.

Re: Should We??

Sounds good to me. I wouldn't be overly concerned with it. Beautiful quilts with vintage scraps aren't something little babies should be using anyway (due to SIDS).

Re: Should We??

Agreed. I'm determined not to sweat it. I'm going to fight the law tooth and nail, to the best of my ability, but I'm not going to worry about the compliance of my products.

Re: Should We??

And by "not worry", I mean I'm not worried because I know they're safe. I don't mean I'm not worried because I'm a callous baby killer.

Just so we're clear :)

I'm removing ALL my children's items on Feb. 9th. I don't want to have to worry about it.

Re: Should We??

I just couldn't take the stress of not knowing how to test and worrying that someone may sue me since proponents of this law will be up in arms. I closed my baby store (Babes n Tots) and was very sad about it. I was just getting started and had obtained my first wholesale order and had my hats featured in a magazine. I'm hoping to open another store that does not concentrate on just baby items. Once all this mess is straightened out and the rules are clear and something that I can comply with I'll probably add baby items to the new store. I have so many items already made that I planned on listing. If I had ever known that the government would be a problem in my selling baby items I never would have opened the store to begin with. I see many baby stores that opened in Jan and probably still have no knowledge that this law even exist. I wish I was one who didn't know. I'd still be selling in ignorant bliss.
