Safety Eyes

In the plush monsters I make, all materials are exempt besides the plastic safety eyes. Deos any one know how these fit into this law? I recieved a test report from the company that makes them stating the amount of lead in them (which is below the acceptable level). Do I still need to get them tested or will this certificate still be o.k.? I guess I could leave them off my work but I really love using them and my monsters are not intended for children under 3 which is stated on the tag. Below is an example of what I have although my regular monsters are stuffed with polyfil instead of lavender.

Re: Safety Eyes

Depends on the certificate. Was the testing done in a CPSIA certified lab? Does it show when it was tested and what tests were used? Does it show the % of lead that was found?

Re: Safety Eyes

I can read it. The lab is on the current list of accredited labs, I say current because the tests were done in March of 2007 almost 5 years ago. There are no batch numbers, I seriously doubt you are using the batch that was tested. The test results need to apply to what you are using. 5 years ago, they may not have been on the list as there was no CPSIA law. No one knows how the "eyes" have been changed over the years.

Here's the link to the current accredited labs. I'd look for one near you in the USA and give them a phone call. They should be able to give you a price and quantity they would need for testing , then you would be secure in knowing that they would pass. Or source the eyes from another vendor who has current testing.

Re: Safety Eyes

O.k., I also got a couple from Darice that seem more legitimate and are much more recent- 2009. Now, do I have to get one of these every time they make a new batch of eyes? Cause how will I know if the eyes I have purchased are from the same batch they have given me the GCC on? Is it only if they change the formula or should I just ask for a new GCC every year or so? Sorry for all the questions!! Just don't want to get sued over some dumb eyeballs. Also, the GCCs from Darice don't have the % of lead or phthalates, just that the product was certified.

I just want to say it is a real pain that some of these companies are not being helpful in getting people the information they need. It seems it would be in their best interest because then they will sell more product. Now I have a bunch of eyes that I may or may not be able to use because company x has not nor will give me the correct paperwork. It's also ridiculous that things specifially made for dolls, bears and such could still possibly contain such harmful materials. What the hell else am I going to do with plastic eyes? Plastic eyes are made for dolls and toys, toys are made for children, duh!

Re: Safety Eyes

Unfortunately, that is the way the law was written. Like I agree with you, safety eyes are not general purpose items. they are for children's toys. but in their "wisdom" the DC asshats wrote it for the end manufacturers to test. Like there is something you do when you insert the eyes into your stuffy that would impart lead that wasn't there before. And Unicorns can fly and reproduce squash!!!

Sometimes I think I like Rick Perry, convene congress only for 144 days in two years, the rest of the time they need to go home, get jobs, and live like the rest of the population. Then maybe would learn something and sure as hell couldn't spend their time screwing around with the rest of the population writing insane laws that after almost 3 1/2 years and untold hours of gov time and our money, and the loss of untold thousands of micro businesses still hasn't saved ONE SINGLE SOLITARY CHILD from bibs, and buttons and zippers in their Levis. But has given a pass to Big Box to import billions of products of cheap crap that self destructs in months. Okay, My rant is over, I hate this administration, the unions, and the establishment. I don't want to live in Greece, Russia or Venezuela.

Re: Safety Eyes

I love reading your rants Beverly! Maybe I'll just scrap the eyes all together and come up with another solution. My monsters just won't be the same :(
