Question about Lead in buttons

I am just now reading all of this and its sending me into a panic. I sew buttons on my crochet items for babies.

Do I need to have them third party tested, or is a statement from the button manufacturer that it meets cpsia enough?

I am going to put the chocking hazard label on my packaging so i think i am safe there.

I wanted to start making ribbon hair clips for children, as long as the products i buy to make them meet cpsia, am i covered? or is this also subject to third party testing?

Re: Question about Lead in buttons

I have read the cspia manual and can't find an answer to my question. I would assume if the button is lead free I wouldn't be required to do amything?

Re: Question about Lead in buttons

azek2000, the CSPIA has posted it's "Table B" which has the exempted items on it, but buttons is not on there. They have reserved the right to amend or discard this table of "exempt" items. They have not come down with a final answer for this question. If you go to http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html, there is a link to receive email updates, which will tell you when decisions have been made, etc.

Re: Question about Lead in buttons

azek2000...This is also very confusing to me. I think that is correct, but did you find out if you needed to test the buttons? I have been looking and I figure that if my supplier has tested them I do not need to...

MissLabel did mine, she did a fabulous job. They are very professional looking, quick turn around time and her price was very reasonable.

Re: Question about Lead in buttons

At this point you must know (and not by assumption) but by the manufacturer of the buttons providing you documentation about their lead and pthalate content. You must keep this documentation on file that it is below the limits of the law for these substances. You then can sell - until Feb. 2010 when the Stay on testing ends and you will be required to test each batch and lot of each item that you make by an approved, third party laboratory at the thousands of dollars that these labs want to test one item.

There are some button manufacturers who have stated that their buttons are not made for use by children or on children's items and they will not be testing or providing any documentation. If you encounter that you cannot use those buttons under CPSIA.

We need this law amended or withdrawn. There are still bills in both Houses of Congress to do that - don't wait until they are forgotten about.
