Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

I would like to get some professional looking labels for my baby crochet items. Since I make hats and shoes mostly, it seems I do not need FTC labels, just CPISA labels. Can someone give me some advice as to how to get labels printed in bulk if I am required to have the date I made the item on them?? Thanks

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

Have woven labels made and you do not have to worry about the inks used, and if they will fade. On the last line have a date code woven in. I use:
10JFMAMJJASOND11. You could use 10 1234 11 the year, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th quarter. 10WSSF11 the year Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. Use whatever code makes sense to you, there is no required standard.

When I complete something, I take a stitch under the year and month with floss to date the garment. Works for me, and is no sweat.

Thanks so much for the advise! Now, I just need to get better at hand stitching them in. It looks pretty pathetic right now. lol

You could try iron-on adhesive. It's on the exempt list as long as it cannot be touched by the child.

I got the info from here: http://www.whatisthecpsia.com/?p=486

Embeshop -

That's a wonderful idea, especially for shoes! Do you think it would work on in hats that stretch? I would worry about an iron on not really working very well with something that stretches???

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

Yes, it works great on shoes!! I use them on our booties. First I tried fabric glue but it was a mess to work with and handstitching took me forever.

I'm adding hats to my shop soon and figure the label is small enough (my labels are about 1.25 inches wide) that it shouldn't make too big a difference in how it stretches.

btw- Your cotton flapper beanies are so adorable!

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

I just found labels made by someone on Etsy specifically for knit items. I just don't know how I would get that pesky date on them though since I can't stitch on it. This date is really kind of annoying me! :p

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

I got labels from misslabel ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/misslabel ) here on etsy and then use double sided fuse-able web to iron them on. The webbing is permanent once ironed so no worries about it coming off in the wash.

I wish I had gone with FayeMaloneDesigns suggestion for the date and plan to for the next batch I order. We just have DOM: __________ and then write the date in with a pen. Depending on the pen it sometimes leaks or bleeds and then you have to make sure the pen is compliant!

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

i use a local etsian and i have her leave a spot for a date and batch number. at staples i purchased a little stamp maker (comes with a bunch of rubber numbers and letters) and at michaels i purchased archival ink (permanent and works great on satin labels, no bleeding). works great and looks professional. i used JennifersJewels here on etsy. she is fabulous. i invested 25 for the stamp set and 10 for a 4" by 6" ink pad, that i probably will never use up. the labels vary, but she is VERY reasonable and EXTREMELY knowledgeable about exactly what needs to be on the labels. hope this helps. because a small investment now will save you thousands in fines later.

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

Great ideas!

All sewing in my handmade shop (greenpeastudio) has come to a halt while I've tried to figure out labeling...it was the date that was so problematic.

Now I've got some options to look at! Thanks!

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

yes frolicdesign. i thought i was going to have a rough time of it. but honestly the hardest thing about the labeling for me is being lazy and not putting all the numbers back in the case and searching thru my bag for them. haha.

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

If Michaels were still open I would be on my way now for some ink and stamps! Thanks for the suggestion MissEmmasCloset.

I already have some lettered stamps, hopefully I can find just numbers when I go shopping this weekend.

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

Discount Labels is an excellent source of labels. They are used by printers to make labels.

Here's the link. Printers outsource labels and this is one source.

MissEmmasCloset -

Can you post a link to your number stamp? I am not sure what to look for. This is all I can find...

Thanks!

Re: Ordering labels in bulk but still following requirements

This might be a dumb question, but where do I go to find out what specific labels I need to use? I mean what do they need to say? Until now I have made purses but am now jumping into leotards, dance costumes, and ice-skating dresses. Thanks for your help!

Thank you. That forum is very helpful!

Another dumb question. (Sorry, I'm new to this) ... What does "marking" mean? I think I need to do that.

marking just means people want to find the thread later in their list of forums they posted in. :)
