Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

This bill is intended to 'protect' consumers from unsafe cosmetics. the regulations and restrictions imposed are unnecessary, and will most likely put many etsy sellers out of business!! these rules will place homemade natural cosmetic products on the endangered species list, leaving the world nothing but bland, mass-produced, chemical- and preservative-laden lotions, lip balms, soaps, and fragrances.

that artisinal brown sugar bar you've been addicted to? gone. the handmade chapstick that you order by the truckload because no one else makes it just right? kiss it goodbye!

if you love honest, natural, homemade cosmetics, please stand up! this bill has not yet been signed, it can still be altered to allow us our rights to purchase and produce excellent and safe products. please, sign the petition, or at least read the bill, and have a good hard look at what you have to lose.

show the whole country that etsy is powerful, and that crafters, make-ers, and we-who-create are a force to be reckoned with!

if this is an important issue to you, please share it with a friend. heck, share it with all your friends!

thank you!!

ps- sorry for cross-posting this, but it's an issue that affects a lot of us, and i'm not quite sure how to categorize it!

SweetCalamity,
Notice the initial after these people's names! ALL Ds! The same group that brought CPSIA, Bobby Rush & that group of Democrates. These people are all Progressives in the Democtatic Party & if they are not voted out of office soon, we will be living in a country w/o any freedoms!

This bill is a joke. Few people understand how much damage it would do. And the people who wrote it don't care.

Thank you for posting this, SweetCalamity!

This sounds awful... I have bought a few mineral eye colors on Etsy, and intend to buy more cosmetics here in the future. The REAL cosmetics dangers they should be addressing are all the POISONS in big national brand cosmetics (some of which aren't even required to be listed on the label or tested for safety), NOT endanger quality handmade cosmetics. Yikes!!! Going to sign petition... TFS!

This bill also affects Etsy, as they would be considered the retailers because it's on their site.... This bill hits a lot more people than I think anyone realizes.

I've signed every petition, wrote each of my congressmen, state senators, and every individual I could scurry up and email. Every store that sold soaps, cosmetics and the likes would have to follow the 'trace ingredients' rules this bill contains.... If this passes the price of soap and cosmetics just sky-rocketed! and each of us are without the hard work we all have put into making natural products as an alternative to chemical laden crap that is on the market today.

Consumers<
It puts ALL OF YOUR directly back into the hands of Mass Produced & Manufactored Products all over again.

Sorry this bill irritates the liven (&$()*@&%$)@&% outta me (YEP)!

Etsy is not considered a retailer. They are a selling venue. Same as they are not responsible for children's product makers selling items that may or may not comply with CPSIA.

We must adhere to all applicable laws that affect the products we sell.

The whole point here is if I want to buy anything from anyplace & put it on my face, what's it to anyone in Washington? This is all about control! It's Progressive & the history of this movement is frightening!

Hate to start an argument, but I could say the same thing about smoking marijuana.

It find it funny how you all pick and choose which laws should come into effect, depending on how you feel they affect you. This bill, as I've come to understand it, is pretty ridiculously stupid, but some of the arguments against it are equally misinformed. Sigh.

Re: Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

Here they go again. They just about ruined the specialty toy market putting small mfg's out of business, causing some good European countries to cut the US out of their customer base, and causing retailers to lose 100's of thousands of dollars by forcing them to discard "unsafe" toys. Must be a slow week in congress. Contact all you want, they "just don't give a damn, Scarlet".

Not just toys. They have just about ruined the entire under 13 market except for the mega stores and manufacturers who they gave the right to have "in house testing labs".

Re: Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

As a Cosmetologist for over 20 years I find this Bill to be very un called for!! In my many years of working with cosmetics and beauty products along with my colleges I do not find that any of us have a higher rate of cancer or sickness. If there were the FDA would need to step in. As this is not the case lots of ingredients have got a bad rap for no reason.
Please sign the oppose safe cosmetic act it is not going to make things safer only make cosmetics more expensive.

Re: Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

I missed a point - When the CPSIA went into affect it was made retroactive. That means items on the shelf had to be destroyed. Mfgs had to either destroy or re-test. Retailers had to destroy. We were small and at latest count discarded over $3000 worth of inventory. Make sure this bill doesn't have the same requirement or you'll lose more than you think.

Re: Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

Personally, I think the people who initially wrote this bill had all good intentions when they initially sat down with the 'IDEA' of it....

HOWEVER,
Once the polliticians got their hands on it and the FDA, who's administration is suffering from 'conflict of interest', they just ran with it.... You watch if this passes it will be just like what happened with the CPSIA and big manufacturers will get their own private labs and again not completely comply with their end of the 'FULL INGREDIENTS LIST'....

I wish more attention were focused on this subject for the fact that handmade soaps B&B and cosmetics are a HUGE amount of Etsy's sales.... besides suppliers. This drastically reduces their revenues too! And all the buyers of our products are going to loose us.

I hope and pray that this doesn't pass, for everyone's good, not just mine own.

Re: Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

When they banned Phylates (please excuse my spelling) in products, the big corps continued to use them and just quit putting it as an ingredient on the labels, now they are known as 'TRADE SECRETES' in the big corps....

But it's been proven that they are still in products.

Re: Oppose HR 5786 Safe Cosmetics act of 2010

The irony is that it's big companies who typically put a lot of nasty stuff in cosmetics...

Check out this site...

http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

Granted that the database does list ALL risks, and even things you think are safe can be harmful in very large doses. But, still I stopped buying everything that was in the red.
