Re: OilCloth ??

No, sorry to say, oilcloth is not CPSIA-compliant. This is the official statement from Oilcloth, International:

"The recent Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) prohibits oilcloth garments such as bibs and aprons or toys for children under age 12. This is due to the level of phthalates (a softener present in all vinyl) in the PVC vinyl of which oilcloth is made. There are no heavy metals in oilcloth. It is constructed of vinyl with a poly/cotton scrim backing, printed by rotogravure."

I think there might be other, similar fabrics that would be CPSIA-compliant. For example, you might check out Mimi the Sardine (www.mimithesardine.com). Their stuff is much more expensive, though, but on the plus side, it's machine-washable.

I'm sure she's very good, but the question was about CPSIA compliance, and sadly, oilcloth is not compliant. I have seen it in the stores (at Target on chalk-mats) so someone must make something similar, but generally it's not compliant.

This is a note from her shop:

Please note that the recent Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) prohibits oilcloth garments such as bibs and aprons or toys for children. While there are no heavy metals in oilcloth, it does contain Phthalates, which softens the plastic coating used to manufacture Oilcloth.

Re: OilCloth ??

I know that the question was about CPSIA complaince, but if you'll look at the second post, someone specifically asked where they could find oil cloth. And since I happened to know of a source, I thought I'd offer the info. sheesh!
