After spending a lot of time these past few weeks pouring over these message boards and various blogs, I finally took the leap and made my own labels. Just wanted to share how I did it, and give thanks to those that previously posted helpful tips!

Hope to save someone else the trouble of figuring this out!!!

Re: New DIY label

Use a sheet of parchment paper over the ribbon. Shouldn't melt! Good luck!

Re: New DIY label

First let me tell you how I melted it. I used my Creative Textile Tool and it heats up to 700 degrees. It turned the transfer paper brown on contact (must have used the wrong attachment) and melted the ribbon instantly.

So then I got out my steam iron and at first I used a synthetic heat setting. The ribbon said it could take a low heat in the dryer and it said no iron. But I figure if she could do it, then so could I, right? Well, low heat wasn't hot enough.

So then I used a sheet of paper to protect the ribbon and put my iron on cotton/steam setting and put the iron to the paper. It worked within a very few seconds. Iron on transfer was stuck to the ribbon and the ribbon took the heat. The shiny side of the ribbon heats up real fast and that helps it to work faster. I let it cool down and peeled off the paper backing and it was so neat I laughed out loud. And of course I couldn't wait to let everyone know what a great idea she had with this.

I love it!

Re: New DIY label

Great advice! This is probably the most helpful information I have received about these labels. Thanks so much for coming back yoursandi and explaining all that. I look forward to getting my labels done. Good luck to all who will attempt their own labels!

Re: New DIY label

For all of us that bought excess muslin and will be moving over to the ribbon technique, you can still use the muslin as a pressing cloth. You prewash it to remove all the chemicals and don't add bleach or fabric softener to the water. Wet it and place it over your delicate ironing to put the steam into the fabric without the high heat settings. Great for pressing suit coats and such without putting that dreaded iron shine to your nice clothes.

Muslin is great for making stuffed animals and dolls, too. I double it up to make it stronger since I usually get the cheapest muslin. I also learn everything the hard way. LOL

Re: New DIY label

Hi CurlyQ, Thanks for linking to my fabric label instructions in your blog post - that was sweet! http://duhbe.com/blog/?p=627/

For those trying to print on fabric rather than going to iron-on route, you must use treated fabric or the printer ink will not stick (as somebody pointed out above)

I'm not sure where the idea that FTC and CPSIA require different labels started - but I've seen nothing by either agency which states that. (actually, FTC rules were written before CPSIA was ever conceived, do CPSIA rules mention the FTC?)

I love seeing everybody's label designs. You are not only complying with the law, but your items look so much more professional with your labels!

Re: New DIY label

Yeah, 700 degrees was a bit hot. LOL The good news is that I can admit my mistakes and I also learned a lot from reading all the helpful tips and techniques. I like that we can share information in this way.

I have use for both types of labels. They both serve a useful function and that's the main thing. We here on Etsy know how to get the job done right and pull together as a community when the going gets rough.

Re: New DIY label

thank you, thank you! I'll give it a try. I had a great printer but they stopped using satin ribbon in smaller batches, bummer.

Re: New DIY label

For those of you who have tried this out, did you use photoshop elements 8 or another program? I don't have any type of photoshop and didn't know if I needed to purchase it or if there was another program that I could use.
Thanks!!
