I've been waiting for a week to be able to announce this!

Senator Jim DeMint (R) SC, has announced he's introducing legislation next week to reform CPSIA http://bit.ly/SA0A

As one of the advisors to his legislative aides, I can say I think you all will be pleased. It won't cover everyone but it's a step in the right direction.

Re: New CPSIA legislation (really)

i'm following hillstfr & twittering to others to do it. other twitterers, let's get everyone in the loop.

Re: New CPSIA legislation (really)

Thank you, Kathleen! Can you clarify: we can or cannot sell untested items from February 10, 2009 until sometime in late March, 2009, when the stay goes into effect?

Sure need to know if I can simply get back to work on children's clothing now or not.

Re: New CPSIA legislation (really)

That really is great news! Thanks so much for all your hard work. I left a comment on his page earlier today to thank him and offer a suggestion for "affordable" (key word) testing to be made available to those who do not have access to supplier-tested supplies, such as those who recycle/upcycle.

I think the legislation is off to a great start though. Now we all just need to contact OUR state reps so they'll support it!

Re: New CPSIA legislation (really)

"Affordable" testing would be great! I make handmade rosaries. Those, of course, have metal parts. I contacted all my suppliers and most of them stated they only buy lead-free components, but they are not tested. And I'd be surprised if they did.

Thank goodness for Sen. DeMint! I hope there turn out to be many more like him!

Sorry, meant to say I'd be surprised if they were to start testing!

Re: New CPSIA legislation (really)

KathleenF, thanks--

Will the CPSIA (even amended) require components sellers to test? That's the real question, right?

If the problem's going to be solved, then the Big Guys have to be forced to test accurately, and disclose the results!!!

Friends - I am Senator DeMint's staffer that handles the CPSIA fix for him. I first want to thank all of you for bringing this issue to the Hill's attention. Offices are paying attention to this issue because you guys are burning up the phone lines.

The Senator and I are going to need your continued help though. I'll be sending out action items over the weekend so we can work together to fix the problems with CPSIA.

I'd like to start by asking you to follow me on Twitter. My username is hillstfr . I will be sending tweets with action items and updates. It'll probably be the easiest way to follow me. Please also retweet the tweet that I sent out this afternoon announcing Senator DeMint's legislation. And please ask your CPSIA interested friends to follow me.

That's it for now. Feel free to hit me on twitter if you've got questions or comments.

Re: New CPSIA legislation (really)

thanks and yes I will be sending out the word that someone heard us and is willing to represent the little manufacturers. I 'll sign up for twitter and get the scoup. Let's keep up the fight til this nightmare is fixed and not just patched up til we have to face it again in 2010. That would be a nitemare.
Tom thanks and let the congressman know we are grateful and willing to do what ever we can to get this thing truly fixed.
