NPR on Phalates: Ban Not Necessary...(4.1.09)

So, I am desperate to learn all I can about phthalates -- supposed risk, where they are generally found, testing costs (YIKES!), etc. This directly affects my tiny operation with bibs and blankets ("child care articles"). I came across this article on NPR's website today. Given the date it was written, it's like a cruel April Fool's joke. The scientists at the CPSC are standing behind their 25 years of study of the use of phthalates, concluding a ban wasn't necessary (!!) and that they don't believe there is any adverse risk brought about by their use in children's products.

I came across this story reading Overlawyered's post from today (4.2.09):

This article has (as always) lots of great links to other sources.

*Off to bang my head against the wall*

This reminds me of a very tangled ball of yarn. I still cannot believe that neither Barbara Boxer nor Diane Fienstien has replied to my emails. I am in thier area for pete's sake. I actually sent them some of the threads that were going on right before the 10th.
I am glad NPR finally got it, though. That will help a lot.

Oh -- I forgot to mention, there are several really good entries in the comments section of the NPR story. There are pro and con, which is what I really needed, something of a virtual debate/discussion, to help me begin to understand the whole of the issue and relevant science.

Thank you, littlethingsboutique ...

Everything I make has levels of phthalates that are apparently a tad high (good for getting that vinyl nice and pliable, perhaps not so good otherwise). I've been trying to make sense of things, so I really appreciate the link and the opportunity to get more savvy.

thank you, very interesting read. Such a frustrating situation -- I feel for all of you who have been so profoundly impacted by this. It's good to see NPR finally picking up on the story, although I am disappointed that it took so long to get any significant mention.

I think there are a lot of us out here that knew it was baloney from the beginning. I think Chicken Little is in charge of the Congress: "the sky is falling, the sky is falling."

Reminds me of this video by pen and teller:
