My head is wrecked! Help needed with labels please....

Hi there,

I have read lots of threads here in the forums and the legal stuff posted by some very helpful people but I'm trying to finalise my new labels and still don't know if I have all the correct information.

I am using 100% linen, cotton embroidery floss and polyfill stuffing to make my dolls-that's it.

On my labels, do I need:

Shop name
Product care information
Country where made

Is there anything I'm missing?

Any help would be so graetefully received. I've had enough of it now! Very confused, Lesley

Re: My head is wrecked! Help needed with labels please....

For a crafter of children under 13 items the CPSIA tracking label must include at minimum :
* Your company, shop name, or RN# (if elsewhere on the product no need to repeat)
* The city, state/territory, & country where the item was completed
* How to contact the business (website or registered city, state/territory, & country of the business) if it is different from where the item was completed
* The date of manufacture or completion of the product minimally the season and year
* If you make repeats of the designs then you may also need a batch number, but only if the pieces are mostly identical looking and made of the same exact raw materials as each other and where made or completed on the same day.
The tracking label must tie back to a GCC you keep in your files.
Read more about tracking info that is required on every product for children under 13 here
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/sect103policy.pdf
The CPSC has an outline of what needs to be on the GCC at http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/faq/elecertfaq.pdf

The FTC requires care and content labels for most fiber based products for customers of any age but depends on the exact nature of the product, like most hats & socks are exempt but if wool is one of the fibers then it is required to have care label on it. The FTC care and content label needs at the very least:
- Your company, shop name, or RN# (required to be here, so if you have this label no need to repeat it on the CPSIA label)
- Fiber content by %
- Country of origin for each fiber used
- Washing and care instructions
Other info may be required depending on the exact fabrics use like registered trademark info for fabrics that are followed by a ® or the internation symbols for care instructions.
FTC home page

The Textile and Wool Acts gateway page
http://business.ftc.gov/selected-industries/clothing-and-textiles
Clothing, accessories and home furnishings care and content labeling
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus21.shtm#covered
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus50.shtm#Complying

The FTC has specific rules on how the label must look from the size the print based on label size to how much space on the front of th label must be used to include the information must be present on the front. On the other hand the CPSC has only guidance on how their label must appear and the information being easily visable seems to be the major concern of this Federal agency.

Additionally some states require lisence # to be included on certain products, like toys or stuffed animals and plush, if that type of item is made there or sold to customer's that reside there. Other states require warning of potential "health hazards" unless the designer has had the item tested to prove that the product falls below a particular state's allowable limits for their list of "hazardous substances" again that can depend on the exact natural of a product or the age of the intented user. Always best to start with your own State's Division of Comsumer Affairs to lead you on to other information and regulations that may need to be followed.
