This post is mostly for those of us who make things considered "child care articles" or things that are intended to be put in a child's mouth.

I got a document from the CPSC today that says they're recommending only items that are likely to have phthalates in them be tested. Things like natural wood, cotton fabric, etc would be exempt!

I spoke quite a bit about this during my testimony to the Small Business Committee (as did others), and I'm so glad to see something come of it! Yay!!!

Here's the document:

Re: Most Fabric recommended to be exempt from Phthalate testing... Yay!!!

This may be a silly question that has already been addressed numerous times, but I need someone to fill me in :)

It's pretty clear that the cotton fabric we use is lead free, but how do we know that the materials used to print the designs on the fabric is lead free? I use mostly designer fabrics from Rowan, Westminster, Michael Miller and Alexander Henry. Seems as though these are reputable companies and I wouldn't think they use any harmful chemicals in their dyes, but how do we know? If the fabric manufacturers test their products, is that good enough for us to "manufacture" our children's items and still be covered by the law?

Thanks for any light you could shed on this CRAZY new law.

Re: Most Fabric recommended to be exempt from Phthalate testing... Yay!!!

I had just about given up sewing any new doll clothes earlier this year with all the restrictions. But as others have said, I'm starting to see a glimmer of hope in the exemptions and clarifications. I've got my labels made and my sewing machine is humming again.

Thank you so much StarbrightBaby for keeping us all informed (and inspired!!)!

StarbrightBaby, I just wanted to personally thank you for your efforts. I am glad it was you who testified before Congress. You did a fantastic job representing us.

Currently, I am waiting to see if a Letter of Compliance is available from our Hawaiian based (polyester)fiber fill company. They are very accommodating and I should hear from them within a day or so. I will be sure to post an update for all on the island.

I read Poly-fil does offer this letter. Great news there, too.

Parkplacebaby, did you read the PDF's from the CPSC about exemptions in fabric? In it they state why they are exempting fabric, and how the testimony they received about how fabric is printed/dyed now as opposed to years ago. It will clear up your fears about current processes in fabric printing.

I know. :) But it's nice that companies are providing documentation anyway.

Cpsia is confusing to me. I make newborn photo props (yarn),I think it's exempt. Can someone let me know what the labels need to say. In lay terms.Thank You

Re: Most Fabric recommended to be exempt from Phthalate testing... Yay!!!

So is there a final yes/no on minky and those 100% polyester materials? We use a lot of that and its super popular but I couldn't find mention of that in the documents from CPSIA unless I totally missed it!
