Most Fabric recommended to be exempt from Phthalate testing... Yay!!!

This post is mostly for those of us who make things considered "child care articles" or things that are intended to be put in a child's mouth.

I got a document from the CPSC today that says they're recommending only items that are likely to have phthalates in them be tested. Things like natural wood, cotton fabric, etc would be exempt!

I spoke quite a bit about this during my testimony to the Small Business Committee (as did others), and I'm so glad to see something come of it! Yay!!!

Here's the document:

Yea! I guess I only have to worry about labels right now then and I'm not rushing on that yet.

Thanks for the update!

I read that document the other day and thought of you StarBright! Now you won't have to sacrifice any of your teething giraffes to the grinder for unnecessary testing :)

That is good to know! But they don't make these documents easy to read, do they?

Thank you Star Bright. Such good news. Do you think we dare be hopeful they will decide the same for lead testing for all the materials currently on the exempt list?

Re: Most Fabric recommended to be exempt from Phthalate testing... Yay!!!

But what do you all think about elastic? Is it or isn't it inaccessible? What is also confusing to me is they keep referring to child care items, then they talk about zippers, elastic, and covered buttons, and I think they are referring to more than childcare articles.

And I mean to say, can you see these testing labs with a probe the size of a babies finger trying to get it into a crevice in an object and if they can "touch" a component with lead it must be hazardous! And brake levers on bicycles are dangerous because 12 yos may wipe their hand across their mouths without washing their hands first. Good Golly!

Those things are so hard to read. Does this new thing cover toys? And does it cover fleece?

Thank you StarBright:)
I'm wondering if certain PVC fabrics such as oilcloth and chalkcloth contain more than 1% of phthalates? If anyone knows the answer, I'd be happy to know. The top manufacturer of this product does state they contain them, but does not indicate the amount.

Re: Most Fabric recommended to be exempt from Phthalate testing... Yay!!!

why would it need to be tested for that anyway isn't this chemical only found in plastics to make them soft? Ya'll shouldn't even have to be testing for lead either for that matter.

Marking- and yes, I would really like to know about Jo Anne's anti pill fleece. I can never seem to get a straight answer on that stuff.

___________

Stuff that's on the inside was already declared exempt from testing.
