Metallic Thread

Does anyone know if metallic thread contains lead?

I'm scared to make anything now!

Re: Metallic Thread

I have a silver metallic thread called Sulky Holoshimmer 145-6002 but I haven't actually used it to sew anything yet. I guess I should check into your lead question because if it does there's NO way I'll use it.

Re: Metallic Thread

First step is to contact the manufacurer of the metalic thread and find out what testing if any they have done. Get a hard copy print of the test results with the manufacturer's letterhead or web address on it and keep it with the rest of your important business documents. This will hold you as reasonable proof till the mandatory 3rd party testing of unpainted and non-jewelry items starts in Feb 2010. After that the way I read this http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/cpsiasbguide.html , unless your making items out of entirerly exepmt materials regardless of any certificates from your raw materials manufacturers you will be responible to have your final product tested by the government approved labs.

PS: I forgot to mention certain product catergories need to know about the Phthalate content as well. Make sure you read the government link above carefully clicking on all of the different links on it.

Re: Metallic Thread

Are you asking about sewing threads? or about metallic looking threads in fabric?

About 99% of metallic looking threads in modern sewing fabrics and trimmings(the stuff I specialize in), have no metals in them at all. They are Lurex or other similar fibers. These are blends of polyester and nylons.

Re: Metallic Thread

In addition, some of these fibers are microscopically sprayed with aluminium enhancing the metallic look.
There are no leads in these.

Re: Metallic Thread

Composition of sewing thread is always on the spool labels. You will need to check these to know exactly what you have.

Re: Metallic Thread

Don't know for sure, but I know I was getting some from Wal-mart, and at least my store stopped carrying it. The girl there said she thought it was all recalled. So, I'm guessing it had lead. I'm sure you can't trust this, but probably many retail locations are taking things with lead off the shelves as they are told to and as this bill is more and more enforced.

Re: Metallic Thread

In the textile business items that have an actual metal content like speciality fabrics for industry, fire-retardants etc will include a content label mentioning the word 'metal'(the noun), other textiles with shiny threads are labelled as 'metallic' (the descriptive adjective) because they look like metals but actually are not metal threads, only look-a-likes.
These manufacturer labels usually come with the bolts, so when you buy a yard or two, you do not receive it. If you need a full content disclosure you will need to specially request it from the manufacturer. The sales person normally knows nothing about this. This can be a little time consuming and a pain when dealing with small quantities. But it is possible, you just need a little patience.
