Hey all, I was just asked to make a ring for an infant. My first instinct is that I wouldn't even let my child hold a ring until they were 3- it would have gone straight in their mouths. HOWEVER, I know not all people feel the same.
My question is if there are laws that prohibit making jewelry for babies?
I apologize beforehand if I sound uninformed on this matter- I am!

Re: Making rings for an infant

Al has done this for close family/friends. And then he sizes the rings as they grow. One is now in college and still wears her 1st birthday ring. Another wears hers on a charm bracelet. Just like LILGIRLCA, I think these baby rings were worn just for photos until they got older and far passed the everything-goes-in-the-mouth phase.

:)

Re: Making rings for an infant

No I wouldn't do it. Sound's like another lawsuit, like the lady that sued for HOT coffee, and won.

I also wouldn't want it on my mind knowing I caused harm to a child.

Offer to make a custom ring for the Mother in her size with the child's birthstone and/or name?

Re: Making rings for an infant

Sorry but this has got my back up! babies are beautiful, they need no adornmements to make them look more attractive. There is enough in the papers to realise that creeps are everywhere, why draw unecessary attention to your most treasured gift?

I have just read some more of the posts on here and quite honestly, like many other posts here I am astonished at your lack of care for babies, your only care is for being SUED and your PROFITS!, thats disgusting! Jewelery on children is potentially dangerous and can lead to death.
LIL GIRL CA yes o.k the ring will be safe, how will you feel if a child is dragged and drowned through a raging river by her bracelet ??

WandsofWonder -- if a baby falls into a river, are they any more likely to survive if they're not wearing a bracelet? At that age, I think they're usually pretty doomed.

Re: Making rings for an infant

Why not put a noose round its neck in the name of profit! if a baby fell in the river I would try to save it, I would not be counting my tax returns!!!!

Re: Making rings for an infant

My engagement ring was made from an antique (Early 1800"S) baby ring and when i look at it I have always shuddered to think of what happened to the baby that wore it. Probably the baby was fine but..... Adults have been putting rings and other jewelry on babies for hundreds of years-just check out all of those Renaissance paintings but-Eeee Gads! - tiny ones with inhalable objects on their person is so scary to me.

Wow! you need to take a deep cleansing breath! Why are you so hostile? Equating a slender chain as a guard for a ring is not quite a noose around a babies neck, and dragged to their death by a micro chain in a raging river???????

And there is no point in having a store on Etsy, ebay, or anyplace else if you are not interested in making a profit. That is the nature of "business". And part of being in business is knowing your liability. That is one of the things we are all must be concerned with and this law.

Re: Making rings for an infant

There's no way I'd ever, ever, ever make a ring for an infant. Some parents lack common sense, so it's probably up to you to use it yourself.

Re: Making rings for an infant

Different people have different thoughts on infant jewelry. I personally would not put any jewelry on an child under 3, even including earrings.

This is the CIPSA section, no reason we can't discuss children's jewelry and laws here without attacking sellers posts.

Re: Making rings for an infant

I personally would not put a ring on an infant, however I was given a ring at my Christening that was intended to be worn later in my adult life. My mother held onto it until I grew into it (I was maybe 13 when I started to wear it).

It's responsible as a seller to be concerned not only by the intended use of your item, but also how it could effect your business.

Re: Making rings for an infant

Here in India, Baby jewelry is quite common. We have earrings, bangles and anklets and waist chains. Am not very comfortable with rings though..they are too tiny and can slip off the finger and into the baby's mouth with ease. I would think this through.

I'm not sure if there are any actual laws, but the laws of common sense would have me inclined to say that it is definitely a bad idea to make a ring for an infant to wear.

Re: Making rings for an infant

Are you liable as the manufacturer, if a child chokes on a ring you made, but they requested and paid for?
I think that is the business question.

Personally, I would think it is a definite choking hazard. Luckily, I had boy babies, so it wasn't even a thought.

Re: Making rings for an infant

I have two children and from experience I know for a fact that babies put everything in their mouths. For liability purposes I would not create any potential choking hazards for babies. I just went toy shopping and I always pay attention to the recommended ages on the toys just to be extra cautious.

Re: Making rings for an infant

I believe CPSIA laws prohibit making jewelry for children under 12 unless it goes through that testing. But I understand that the law is not in effect right now. In any case, I don't make jewelry for small children, although I do think earrings on baby girls are darling.

Re: Making rings for an infant

The law is actually in effect now. Parts of it are stayed. Depending on what you make and what you make it of you may have to test now or you may be exempt from testing.

Gold, silver and platinum are exempt. The baby rings that are mine and my husband's, our childrens and older family members that have passed on are all 18K gold. They are exempt from any testing. I also have rings from my childhood and my children which are are all gold and precious stones, like amethyst, diamond and ruby and pearl, our birthstones, that are exempt.

The baby rings were only worn on special occasions, the other rings were worn when we were old enough to understand that they did not go in our mouths and were special mementoes given to us by family members who loved us. I still have my moms child's ruby ring. And my aunts child's ring. I have my baby pearl, garnet and gold ring that cost me a fortune to have repaired so that the gold was fixed so that the pearl wouldn't fall out.

I did have to have one of my rings cut off of my finger when I was a little girl when I was at a car show when I reached in the door to feel the fur upholstery and my older brother who was in a foul mood slammed the door shut. If I hadn't had the ring on I would have possibly lost the finger, the ring was smashed, my finger wasn't. The firemen scooped me up, cut the ring off, hugged me close, and bought me an icecream cone. I still have the ring. It was gold and amethyst, and it still is smashed and the band is cut.

Children can be taught to understand to appreciate jewelry. I taught my kids that only food and drink went into their mouths. Not anything else. We gave them fine jewelry when they were very young and they still have it.

Re: Making rings for an infant

I wouldn't on you Purple, but I might on the mother who let's her baby play unattended on the banks of a "raging river", ringed, braceleted or unadorned. That's whats nuts.
