Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

Went to one of several local thrift stores today looking for collectibles and they have a handout for their customers about this law and that they will no longer accept children's items. I spoke with the lady there and she was so upset by this law and said that in this economy, she sees many people who cannot afford new for their children and have to buy in the thrift store, and she doesn't know what they are going to do.

I didn't have a long discussion with her and didn't tell her anything about what has gone on.

It made me sad.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

That is sad. Perhaps those who support this law would like to provide clothing and necessities for these children?

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

beads- no there isn't. they have been told that the testing standards don't apply to them, but they still carry the liability if they accidentally sell a non-compliant item.

they were already required to check against recall lists, but not they will even be responsible for items which were not previously known to contain lead or phthalates.

this sucks.

Yes, we are finding the same thing when we have items to donate...I hope those sanctimonious creeps who pushed this law and are still pushing it need help some day.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

My husband went to donate baby clothes to our local thrift store and the girl at the counter rolled her eyes and said, "Not more children's clothes!" Now it makes sense...just more stuff for her to box up and send to the dump.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

Political Brilliance strikes again! I guess they want me to just throw my gently used kids things in the trash now?

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

This also is happening in my local little thrift that I take things to.
The owner is very upset.
She's been told she is exempted..
But it's a stupid cryin shame.

What do those families do?
Maybe the FIRST thing for them to do is what I've already done, write & call Senators and Congress persons.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

It has nothing to do with the law, but hook up with your local Freecycle. (http://www.freecycle.org) They have groups ALL OVER the country. Pass the word...since thrift shops can't or won't carry kids stuff after this fiasco, Freecycle may be a great thing for people who need help clothing their kids and people who have gently used kids stuff to get rid of.

(Freecycle is not just for kids' stuff, incidentally!)

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

Maybe I should box everything up and mail it to some stupid politician who thought this was a good idea- then they can deal with it- of course they probably will just have some intern take care of it but I like the idea of boxes and boxes of stuff flooding their office.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

I haven't checked our thrift stores here yet but they are probably the same.

People count on them so they can cloth their children and no toys? That is absolutely awful.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

Last week I went to a children's consignment shop that was closing. When I expressed my sadness, the owner said she made the decision because of the new law and once the liquidation started there wasn't any turning back for her. Too bad because she had a wonderful shop.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

I remember when I had my first child. We didn't have money for anything. My husband and I worked all of the time. We never saw each other. I don't know what we would have done if someone hadn't helped us w/ baby items. I can't tell you how much it hurts not to be able to get a christmas present for your child. It may be more difficult to get your items to someone who needs them, but don't throw them away when a family can benefit.

Re: Local thrift store is no longer accepting children's items

My local kids re-sale shop thinks the law doesn't affect her at all, she thinks she is exempt from all liability..
All of local re-sale shops just don't know...
