Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

This is a great post! I just found a few suppliers for ribbon through all of you and I was considering giving up on hair bows since just plain ribbon is kind of boring :)

I didn't contact them, but found the certification for the alligator clips sold at Sally's Beauty Supply (for hair bow sellers). All of them passed and I have a copy if anyone needs it feel free to convo me with your email address and I'll send it along.

Giving this list a bump in case anyone has more to add. In that note does anyone knows of a glitter and sequin that will comply with the cpsia. What about if it is in the children craft section? Thanks so much!,,

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

The important question is, are they compliant with the cpsia? Do they provide you with a certificate of compliance?

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I keep coming back to this thread to see if anybody has gotten any movement on this and it just seems to be the same.

A bunch of you keep citeing: http://cpsia-compliance.blogspot.com/ like it's the holy grail or something. In fact, it's not much to sneeze at and certainly not sufficient to rely on in the face of a lawsuit.

There needs to be a site cross-referenced by manufacturer product, type of product glue paint etc. and compliance status with link to the website where anybody using the product has access to compliance. Theoretically, this should be CPSIA.

And I have written CPSIA and my federal elected officials. Anybody who is affected must do the same.

What is the incentive for larger manufacturers if they can keep us running like little mice? If we are responsible for our products being compliant, if they want to sell here, than they must meet the same standards we must face.

Nothing less is acceptable. Have you written your senator yet?

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

My senators think this is a lovey law that will help "save the children", since they think parents can't take care of them, only government can. And China is a wonderful place that gives us beautiful toys and stuff for children. It's the big businesses that are evil and poisoning the little children. Ha! Many of us have written, called, gone to their locals offices and they still don't get it. I think that there may be only a handful, maybe slightly more, in government that understand what this is doing, and they are pretty much stymied by the party in power, and blocked at every turn. I truly believe the majority of those in congress, don't want to change this law, they are perfectly happy to have everyone of us bow down to them, and be enslaved to their whims. It's a sad day, and getting sadder.

Also, check out this site for the Handmade Toy Alliance.
http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org

They are properly organized, have the language and tactics down and if you check out their business members, you will see what true group effort can do.

Don't just grouse here, go there and actually do something. And no namby pampy stuff about how nobody wants to listen to you boo hoo anyway. Of course they don't! We have to MAKE them listen. And that will only happen if you get up off you hiney rather than sitting back and puting because nothing happened today.

So what are you still sitting here reading! Go to: http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org

since i run that blog... i'll chime in.
it is NOT meant to prevent a lawsuit.

it was started to report suppliers that test and provide that info to us readily, because a lot of suppliers were taking a "it's not our problem" attitude.

that's why it was started, it's very out of date.

i keep trying to get help with adding new suppliers, but i suppose i may have to just sit down one day and make it more efficient. and better to understand why it exists.

while testing was halted, we relied on our suppliers to tell us what was in their products. most of us made a promise not to use suppliers who felt it wasn't their problem. and as that blog grew, some of those same people that didn't think it was their problem, made it their problem.

so, the blog helped. in that respect.

so, anyone want to help add suppliers. ;)

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

the blog got an overhaul and i added an alphabetical linkbar for finding suppliers easier.

still working on sorting them into sections.

please read all info on the sites, as not everything is compliant. this blog is easy reference and contact info for suppliers that have been mentioned.

still working on exact info.

i will be doing more research and adding back in the *next to suppliers that are compliant.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Hey all, I may have missed this in the many pages of this thread, but aren't fabrics exempt? My understanding was that fabrics are exempt from lead and Pthalates (sp) testing unless they contain metallic threads. Is my info out of date?

If this is correct, we should not be worried about fabrics, but notions would still be an issue. And of course we have to do FTC labels for fabric items, just not test the actual fabric.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I was about to post exactly what greenhotmama said - I just read the handbook regarding fabrics and I don't understand why we'd need them tested.
