Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Here's a pdf I came across when searching for poly-fil batting and stuffing made by Fairfield: http://www.misterjudy.com/includes/documents/Fairfield/Compliance%20Lettter.pdf
Seems like they are compliant

I just spoke with Carol at Waverly fabrics, and they DO NOT test for CPSIA compliancy... FYI.

Late in the game... and just now reading through *all* of the posts and info - looks like I wasted my day calling fabric companies not on the cpsia-compliance blog... fabrics do not need to be tested from what I've now learned.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

did anyone here create a master list? if so, what page?

----------------------------------
don't know if anyone's mentioned this one yet, but poly-fil products are cpsia compliant. i have an email from them if anyone wants it. but buttons, elastic, etc MAY need to be tested!
------------------------------------
no, it sounds like fabric does not need to be tested. but ftc requires you label with type of fabric, if known or else post "fabric of unknown fibers"

Anyone know what else I need to list for FTC?

----------------------------------

I SSSOOOO agree with you IndieAndChic!
Anyone else feel like we should just throw in the towel and instead of us trying to figure everything out, let the lawmakers sort it out and then let us know?

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I emailed customer service at homesew.com about their buttons. Here is my question to them and their response:

"Yes, we can send any paperwork we have when you order a particular item.

If I were to order buttons from you (I had previously asked about whether you had the testing results for your buttons) would you be able to send me a copy of the test results showing the lead and phil. levels? I make hand crocheted baby sweaters and have to keep track of the certifications per the CPSIA. Is there a list of which buttons you carry that meet the requirements? Thanks, Mary B.
P.S. You can see some of my sweaters on my facebook fan page

in the photos of my CrossRoads Shop."

This sounds like they have the test results and certifications for some of the buttons. Unfortunately, I think I have to order them before I get the paperwork so I won't know which ones are compliant beforehand.

anyone already buying from this company?

HeartFelt4Kids says:
Regarding snaps..Snap Source is compliant and provides certificate stating so.

************************************************************

Does this include the colored snaps or just the silver ones?

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

gentleadornments, great point!!!!!!!! Some of the items discussed don't need testing. Don't let someone overcharge you selling you product that is, in fact, exempt! Do yourself a huge favor and read the actual legislation to find the things that are and are not exempt and what actually needs tags. Write a list of your products with the testing or tags needed next to each. It may take a little time but there is no abridged version of this that will give you all your answers. You won't find it here, either. Some people are getting really freaked out and taking others with them down that road. It's not necessary. After I read the actual documents, which took LESS time than reading these threads, skimming the parts that did not apply to my products, I felt SOOOO much better than after sifting through all the extreme posts on here. I wish you the best!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

This is VERY interesting...I made it to about page 10 before writing this...based on 74 pages of responses...I think what's going to happen is that all of these manufacturers are going to get inidated by requests for certificates stating "no lead" etc in their products. They will ALL eventually "test" their products themselves and put the information on their website. They will basically be forced to if their competition is doing so. So, hopefully this will be a non-issue in the near future for small businesses. If your current materials are not acceptable, I'm sure you'll be able to find ones that are based on the "pressure" this law will put on manufacturers of materials that are used in children's products.

Obviously the hand-made community is vast, and if we all keep pushing, the manufacturers will have to take care of the testing and distribution of information needed for the CPSIA.

Hopefully it comes sooner, than later

Great initiative!

I did not contact, but found the following 2 documents regarding the YUDU INK (on this website http://www.provocraft.com/company/legal/index.php):

General Certificate of Conformity of Section 102 of the CPSIA on the Yudu Ink:
http://www.provocraft.com/company/legal/bin/inks.pdf

Yudu Ink Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
http://www.provocraft.com/company/legal/bin/Yudu_Ink_MSDS.pdf

COMPLIANCE TO CPSIA!!! Yeah am I happy! :D

I didn't have time right now to read all 74 pages of this post so excuse me if I repeat...YKK zippers sent me a letter of compliance. Just e-mail them through their website.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

So I just finish reading it ALL... wow that was long but awesome. So it seems that nobody has received an actual GCC or COC for elastic. The people I've contacted sent mean MSDS but I know that is no good enough. I'll keep you posted if I get an actual certificate and not just a "we are safe" response.
BTW- I really want to help so please put me to work if there is anything I can do toy make all of our work easier. I know I've had a hard time getting everything ready to be able to start. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll open my shop :)

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

someone mentions Rings N Things, the problem with them and the other bead suppliers is that they provide no certificate to the consumer and they clearly state on their sites that their products are NOT for children under 12 years. This is such a cop out on their part. My solution is to use only SS or other approved products in my childrens jewelry and if not to label it for 12 and over only, and to make it such that it doesn't appeal to 12 years and younger, right! making jewelry that doesn't appeal to a little girl under 12 yrs...not happening
