Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Regarding snaps, Snap Source is compliant and provided certificate stating so.

T shirt transfer from Avery - I posted this in another thread but thought it was appropriate for this one also:
I just received the certificate from Avery in regards to the t shirt transfers. I asked about them specifically by product number. I use the paper that you print on then iron on to the fabric. Heres a portion of it:
"..Most products manufactured or imported by Avery Dennison are articles and therefore not currently subject to regulations. Those Avery Dennison products that contain chemicals, namely Glue Stic® glue sticks, Marks-A-Lot® markers, Hi-Liter® highlighters, Carter’s® stamp pads, and Avery® T-shirt transfers, have been reviewed by a toxicologist and certified for use of the Arts and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) seal. The CPSC accepts the ACMI seal as certification of conformance to its regulations for these products.

As enforcement dates under the CPSIA occur, appropriate certifications for affected products will be posted on Avery Dennison’s Partners.com website, located at https://partners.avery.com/index.jsp , under “Product Information” and “Certificates of Compliance”. In the future, please refer to this website page for all product certifications required by Federal or State regulations.

For its regulated products, Avery Dennison retains the laboratory testing services of:

Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, Inc.
100 Northpointe Pkwy.
Buffalo, NY 14228
716 505 3300 .."

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

This law is ridiculous. I am very curious to know if the big labels (Toy's R Us etc...) have their goods tested... who is behind this law anyway? is there any lobbying there?
I am not American and don't live in the US, but I am wondering how I am affected by this law if I have American customers...

Bobbinalong, I am with you! I did not bother to write so much of my thoughts, but that is what I was meaning by "ridiculous".
Can't they get their hands and energy on the food that kids are allowed to eat (Mac Donald etc...)? The stuff put in there will more surely bring them problems later on.
Pffff.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

OK... This may have already been discussed, but after browsing to page 16 of this thread I got lazy!

Does anyone know about Minky? As I understand the fabric is exepmt from testing, but A certificate is still required fromt he supplier. Has anyone come accross a company that supplies minky and can provide documentation? I just e-mailed minky delight... I will post response! Thanks everyone! Great info!

If a specific raw material is mentioned in the lead exemption list you do not need testing certificates for the lead portion of the law. On the other hand if the final product falls into one of the catergories that need phthalate, small parts, or product specific testing there are no exemptions from those portions of the CPSIA. For the phthalate testing if you are able to get test certificates, COCs, or GCCs from the raw material manufacturer with the levels of the 6 phthalates in PPM along with the lab name then you do not have to repeat the testing on the final product. A few product specific tests like flammability of sleep and loungewear can also use the certificates from the raw material manufacturer. As for other tests that may be required, dependant on the final product and it's embellishments, like small parts or durability those tests only need to be preformed once per product style (per year, I think) as long as you continue to use the same supplies from the same distributor.

Goody Hair products said their headbands are compliant and will send certificate. Also Darice, whose safety eyes I use for stuffed animals, is suppose to send me a copy. I will add more as I get them.

Darice came through and sent me a copy of there GCC on the safety eyes. Still waiting on Goody hair products, I'm also trying to get a hold of someone from Blumenthal Lansing Company on their buttons.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

here's a link for the company Prym Consumber USA...most of the sewing notion items I have purchased from them (at Joann's) were under the "brand name" DRITZ.

http://gcc.dritz.com/

If you go to that link - you can enter any one of their UPC codes for more information!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Just so you know you'll probably get a message from PRYM saying something to the effect of "all our stuff is being tested...this product has no testing requirements" leaves you wondering if they are not testing the stuff with no requirements. I contacted them yesterday regarding their fray check specifically and they said yes it is being tested, results will be posted. So yay, I was sure it meant they weren't going to test since they aren't required. I assume it applies to all the other products too, but didnt' ask them about any other specific product.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I haven't been following the whole CPSIA issue because in general my items are not intended for children. However, I'm working to market more to brides for their wedding parties, which is eventually going to include flower girls. So now I'm trying to "catch up" on what's happening with the new requirements.

In reading through some of this thread, I see people talking about getting certificates for items that I think are exempt. There's another thread going:
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6235864
The links are very helpful ... and some of you may find that you don't need to worry about your items because they appear on the exempt list. Worth a look!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Why can't you claim that your items aren't for children... people on etsy will know they are for kids, but legally you aren't required to test them then. I'm not saying I think finding loopholes is moral all the time, but this law is going to prevent so many great sellers from having their creations on here.
