Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Fabric is exempt, for the most part, from lead testing but certain clothing sizes that would fit a child 3 years old and under also need testing for their phthalate levels a section of the law that currently has no exemptions. There are certain types of fabrics like ones with treatments to make them flame resistant or water proof along with vinyl and PVC based fabrics that are not covered by the exemption list.

OK, so, If you are just using regular fabrics (cotton and the like, without metallic prints) and are not making baby clothes, you don't have to worry about the fabric being tested.
Am I right?

(Why would there be phthalates in fabric? that's weird)

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Phthalates are present in more than just plastics, they can be found in cosmetics, body and hair care, perfumes, paints, modeling clay, coatings on pharmaceuticals, homopathic supplements, adhesives, glue, floor tiles, caulk, cleaners, wax, food, ink, etc. as well as fabrics. You would be suprised at how much of everyday things you touch has some form of phthalates in them used as a binder, perservative, gelling agent, lubricant, or suspension agent.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Phthalates aren't in fabric, except for those that may have certain finishes. This is the one point where jewelry and I don't agree. If a bib is made of all cotton, there is no way that it can contain phthalates. The only recall on bibs was on vinylized bibs.Same goes for quilts. There is nothing that you are going to be able to do with your sewing machine or knitting needles to put phthalates in to something.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

When someone buys their fabric and pre washes it then why should it even be tested for lead? The material has been washed so there would be no lead on it right? Anyone else have suggestions?

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I think we should make a list that is divided into categories. - but I don't think it can be done here on the forums - for technical reasons.
Going through this thread to find a supplier for a specific item is impossible.
I've read the first 20 pages or so, but can't keep up.

Great idea, I also tried going through and making a list but it got very confusing. What if it was just a category like Fasteners and all buttons, snaps, hooks, zippers and such were there. Then maybe another with paints, inks and dyes, something like that?? I'm not too sure how to start this though, I'm still working on my labels.

Yes, something like that.
Maybe we could divide the pages between us?
Each will make a list according to pre-decided categories, all will e-mail to me, I will combine everyone's lists, and e-mail back or post it here or on my blog.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I have a question about this if the products I will be making where not intended for children would I still have to follow the law, I mean would I still have to go to my supplier and find out more information. All my products will intend to have labels. etc etc...

Also, If i cant get ahold of my supplier. Or my supplier doesnt know, how do I go about testing the product myself? Do I just go to a testing lab?
