Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Woolies this is what I found online:

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance. MSDS's include information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, andspill/leak procedures. These are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Hi to everyone, I just got a response from Moda Fabrics, which states the following:

Our cotton fabrics contain neither lead nor phthalate.
Our coated fabrics do contain traces that are within the government allowed standards.

She has also supplied with with the certification, I hope this helps.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I would love to help a little more in this process. It has been very time consuming for me to go through all the information and I was thinking we need a main listing of all the companies so far that have confirmed they are compliant and can provide us with documentation.

I would be willing to compile a list of all of these companies that I can then forward to everyone who is interested.

I will ask the following:

Please send me an email with

a. the companies that you have contacted that are already in compliance with either a link of company information or a contact number.

b. companies that you have contacted but have not heard back from

c. email me if you would like to receive the list with periodic updates.

I have an email address specifically for my business, so please send me the info to:

twogirlsdesigns at aol dot com
(please insert @ for at and . before the com)

In the message subject please put: cpsia information

I will add your email to my address book and send updates as I get them.

This may take a little while for me to get it together but I would like to get started on it so that we have at least some info before the Feb. 10 deadline.

I would also like to get a blog started, The name of the list will be:

Childrens Designers for CPSIA Change

One more thing, if you are a designer that is already in compliance, please send me the name of your company with a description of your product. Thanks a bunch and I hope I can help.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

bitofwhimsy,

Your dolls are just precious, looking at them makes me sad not only for the products that might be lost but also the designers that might lose their love and passion of creating. I make children's clothing not only as a great second income for my family, but because it is my passion and joy. I am sure that I can find some other product to make that will bring my much needed income, but will lose the thing that I have loved doing for years and years, creating special items for children.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

You are welcome to make your own list, of course!! I understand the need to do something. :0) That's why I started making mine!!
For sure, the easier access we have to all of the information out there, the better. It wouldn't hurt to have lists all over the place! LOL

Agreed! I think that is one of the hardest things about starting out as a designer, is finding the resources and support we need. I can't wait to take a look at your list.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Just wondering, for those of you that are using compliant materials how will you state this in your listings beginning Feb. 10? Kathleen

In case no one has posted it, here is the direct link to the letter and test from Michael Miller. You have to click on the blog link on their site to reach it, but this should take you there directly. I just printed it out for my files.

Sorry, haven't read through every page, so I apologize if someone else listed this, but Delta has all their MSDS sheets as PDFs on their site.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I sent an email directly to the manufacturer of my ribbon-Lawrence Schiff Silk Mills. While I don't buy from them directly, I thought it would be nice to get the info from them.

I sent one to offray too.

(as an aside, I had never thought of buying ribbon directly from the manufacturer! The prices are amazing, if you're interested in buy 100 yards of ribbon!)

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I emailed concerning Mary Maxim about Bernat baby yarn. This is what I received back:

Thank you for your inquiry. Our yarn buyer checked with Spinrite, a major manufacturer of yarns (Bernat, Paton, etc). They are planning to learn more at an upcoming convention, but he says "At this time, we have been given some information, but a lot of it is vague. The CYCA (Craft Yarn Council of America) is rallying to have yarn manufacturers exempted from this new legislation, however nothing has been finalized as of yet". We will know more in a few weeks--I'm sorry we don't have more information for you at this time.

This is the main type of yarn that I use. However I do use DMC and Aunt Lydia's crochet thread in the 100% crochet cotton and Bamboo crochet thread. Another thread I use is Cystal crochet thread. If any one hears anything regarding these I would love to hear what it is.
Thanks
Cheri
