Lead Paint

Just out of curiosity I did a search to find out where to purchase lead paint. It seems to me that if there is so much of it available to us to use on our crafts then it must be easy to find.

I was not surprised to discover that it is not available for purchase anywhere that I can find. Lead has not been put into paint in the US for many, many years.

So, does the CPSC think that we all have a secret source of lead paint? Is there a stash of it somewhere left over from 1950? Are we all illegally getting it from China?

So where are you getting your lead paint from?

Seriously...
Just about all (if not all) craft paints sold already have a Non-Toxic label on them - all certified by approved labs. If it is Certified Non-Toxic there can be no lead or philates in the paint, glue, finish, etc.

Just another absurdity of CPSIA!

Re: Lead Paint

I called the company that makes my paint today. Surprise! It's water based, non-toxic, and does not contain any lead.

Re: Lead Paint

If only that were enough - obviously to any sane and reasonable person it is more than sufficient, but to the CPSC, they want it tested by us all over again!

Re: Lead Paint

I believe that lead paint has been illegal in the United States since 1968. Someone here has mentioned that it is not illegal in artist paint, but I don't know anything about that.

My paint is the same as Bugga's - water-based, non-toxic acrylic. According to the manufacturer's documentation, you could drink it and the worst that would happen is maybe some stomach irritation. The paint is already required to be tested under other federal regulations, which is why I am so mad that they are making us test it AGAIN!

I have also read that China's lead paint regulations are even stricter than the United States regs. But obviously, nobody is enforcing it.

Re: Lead Paint

1978... but lead still exist at ppms above that allowed in homes... in industrial paint, it's useful in making the paint durable and weather proof.

don't lick a bridge!

Re: Lead Paint

I DO use paint with lead in it, but not for anything I sell on Etsy and DEFINITELY not for anything I'd make for a child. There is lead in some artists' oil paints, for instance "Flake White" (also known as "Lead White" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_paint). I have to be very careful to keep my hands away from my mouth and off things that will be handled by my children.

Re: Lead Paint

I have small cans of One-Shot sign painter's paint (containing lead) that was bought in the '80s and used to letter names and logos on watercraft. I had no takers on Freecycle recently and will likely have to take it to a Hazardous Waste Day locally.

Point being, lead containing paint may not be sold anymore, but it still certainly is around.
