Labels

Hi,

I cannot attach labels to my knitted animals. Is it ok to have a label hanging from the item (like a hang-tag)?
Or - can I include with the packaging (along with laundering instructions, which I always include) a short description?
My items are 100% natural, so what I've been doing is stating "Made in USA, 2012, all natural".
Is that enough?

Also - I'm looking for a new label-maker. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Labels

I make labels (but not paper ones, fabric ones)

If you search saltwater kids hangtag tutorial, she has a great one where you use ipiccy or something similar and make really cool labels with whatever info you want on them; it's fun, anyway.

I don't know how the labelling requirements for toys differ from clothing, so you'll have to get a toy person in here. I do know that for some items you don't have to attach a permanent label to the item if it is impossible (the item is too small, ie a hair barrette) or if it would seriously interfere with the aesthetics of the item (I don't know how they interpret that though, since it seems like a qualitiative sort of thing).

You could do little sew-in labels on your animals if you really wanted to, I think. There are some great tutorials out there for those too, try DuhBe (though you'll have to change some aspects to retain CPSIA compliance).

Re: Labels

Thanks Sara! I really don't want to sew labels on, and some of my toys are too small - but really would ruin them (IMHO) if they had a label saying MADE IN USA etc stuck on their backside.

Hope someone else chimes in! I'm not sure where to go for the correct answer.

Thanks!

Re: Labels

CPSIA labels aren't on a "I don't feel like doing List"., they are government mandatory. You can attach a card with the information only if the item is really too small, like a hair bow. Or hinders the usefullness of the item. , like a necklace/bracelet. The customer can cut the tag off if they choose. Look at stuffed animals in the store, they all have labels.

Re: Labels

I have read the guidelines and it does say the following "If the aesthetics of the product would be ruined by a mark, and a mark cannot be placed in an accessible but inconspicuous location, then the item does not need to be individually marked"

You can find all tracking label information here

Re: Labels

From those questions and answers linked above.

"Each manufacturer is responsible for making a reasonable judgment about which of the required information can be marked on their product and packaging, given the character and type of their product and packaging. When considering the reasonableness of a manufacturer’s decision regarding what information to include in its markings, the Commission intends to look at the individual manufacturer’s situation, along with the practices of peer manufacturers. If a manufacturer makes a determination that it is not practicable to mark the product or its packaging, the manufacturer should make a written record of the reasons on which it based its decision, including copies of any research conducted into the practices of peer manufacturers and other information about its product, which factored into the manufacturer’s decision"

By a quick glance in a toy store, you will see that stuffed toys carry labels. Those would be your peer manufacturers.
