Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

I need a little help, if I read correctly yarn is exempt as long as nothing has been done to it after manufacture. My question is, do I have to attach labels to products I produce with yarn that are geared towards children? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

my understanding is that it is exempt from testing, but that nothing is exempt from labeling (in regards to childrens items).

Anything in regards to children under 18 must be labeled. But you are correct the yarn is exempt from testing.

And remember, they could change their mind on Table B being exempt from testing before Feb. 2010, so keep an eye on the government's website or sign up for emails of updates. http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html

Craftingonthecourt:

The label must contain your
Business name or your Name,
City, State, Zip
Date of Manufacturer (I put August 2009 etc.)
What its made with (100% cotton)
And care instructions (wash cold)

The must be attached to any children's anything, toys, clothing etc. The CSPIA forum has lot of info on the regulations

Labels are not needed if it will change the effectiveness of the product - I translate this into not using them on knitted baby hats because tags would irritate baby's skin

I'd rather not risk an $11,000 fine. I put mine in anyway and let the parents decide if they want to remove it.

I'm pretty sure you still need them. Baby hats purchased in a retail store have permanent tags. Baby hats also fall under FTC tagging rules since it's clothing.

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

Now I have to make new labels with not only care instructions and the fibre content, but the other information required. Thanks for filling me in.

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

Thanks for the info! I make baby booties for newborns and there is no place to add a tag. So, I haven't sold them on Etsy because of the tag issue.

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

If you "can't" add a tag, you can label the packaging. That's my plan for my headbands and my hats at this point. I'm going to try some stretchable iron-on tags for the hats, but I don't know how well that will work. I'll just be writing in the date of manufacture and the fiber content with a fabric marker since it varies and I want to be able to print a whole sheet at once.

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

Quick question...does anyone hear have a resource for labels? Also if I were to sell a kit to knit a baby sweater (I'm in the process of making one up) do I need to label that or include a label to be put onto the sweater once the consumer finishes it?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

I'd love to know where people buy their tags as well. I'd like a small loop tag to put on my knit toys, but I'm not sure where to go about getting some.

Re: Labels for afghans or products made with yarn

I've seen lots of requests for labels in the Alchemy section, so someone must be making them.

For the kits, I don't think you would need a label since the kit itself is not intended for 12 & under. And if the person making the kit needs to label it (for sale or donation purposes) that would be up to them.
