I tried to clarify a few points about labeling requirements for folks given that there have been so many questions about this lately. I hope this is helpful.

If you are using 100% cotton you do not currently have to test, you may have to after feb 2010. You may be using Moda, and other quilt quality fabrics, most of us do, but it is not the fabric manufacturers responsibility to test. Since their fabric is not marketed to children, they fall outside the law as it is currently written. Since you are manufacturing the finished product then you are responsible for testing.

Labeling is another issue entirely from testing. You should already be using fabric content labels. That is already a law on the books. This new labeling is for batch, date, location of manufacture.

Re: Labeling Requirements made simple

Oh my. Marking for later.

I just came off hiatus from my 3rd pregnancy and am planning my reopening. So I guess I'm going to have to get all new labels?

I don't get the 'batch numbers'. Does this mean in the batches I make (ie: 'xx' amount of 'xx' product made would be a batch) or do I have to track the individual fabrics used?

Re: Labeling Requirements made simple

I've just been hanging out here still trying to decide if I want to open a store on Etsy with children's items. I'm not as knowledgeable about everything with CPSIA rules as a lot of you are but I really think things will have to change come February with the whole testing issue, don't you?

I do have some questions about the labeling issue. I see so many people saying they are closing up shop or pulling their children's item already. If it is only labels that have to be on by August, isn't it kind of premature to close up shop now? If you have items that you know are made of safe components, is it really that hard to add some labels to them? From what I can see, you just need the source where they are made, the date and a batch/run number, right? It doesn't seem too hard to print those on a home computer and keep track of your information in a spread sheet. And as far as small accessories go, the labeling terms say "to the extect practicable" so wouldn't that exclude small items from having to be labeled? Am I over-simplifying and missing something? Why can't children's sellers at least get through the holiday season with their labeled items and worry about the testing issue and closing up come February? This whold thing is just so confusing and frustrating.

Re: Labeling Requirements made simple

From wht I read on other threads is that the labels have to be either made from fabric and threaded...or they have to be tested. That is why people are pulling out. It's very hard to put everything they want on a label, especially if it's textiles, if you have to sew it on. But, I read a thread yesterday where a lady said she's going to just print hers on the computer. I may also. But, majority are saying that each batch of labels has to be tested, and since we don't produce in batch, that is where the problem comes in.

Re: Labeling Requirements made simple

Can somebody please tell me in laymen's terms what exactly needs to be on the label I am expected to attach to my dolls? They basically are one of a kind, btw.
