Label Testing

I know that this was touched on in other labeling threads, but I need specific information.

Do we need to test the labels or their ink when we start labeling items in August? If so, is it spelled out in the CPSIA bill? Do you have a link I can reference? I'm looking for more fuel and information when calling my congress people (AGAIN).

Every component of an item needs to be tested. The law is pretty much all inclusive. Even the "exemptions" aren't written into the law.

I spent about an hour being bounced from office to office over the phone trying to get a straight answer on this one. When i finally got the Consumer Product Safety office, I was not even allowed to leave a voice mail to ask my question.

Here's one way to think about it. All children's products are required to be labeled (and eventually tested). The label is required as part of the product. Therefore, the labels must be tested. Maybe that helps?

Thanks, BugaLove. I just wish that a call to the very office that started this whole bill netted something more productive than frustration.

I am making a package for my congress folks with some of my items and spelling out EXACTLY what the CPSIA means to my products and my business.

We are all frustrated and you will get even more frustrated when you get no response from your Congressmen or the standard form letter that seems to have made its way to every member of Congress's office to send out.

Bugga said it correctly. How the law appears in regard to labeling, the label is tested when the product is tested as the complete and finished product is what needs to be tested - for each lot you make. One sample to test per lot, every color change, embellishment change, new bolt of fabric, new spool of thread, and so on is a new lot.

CPSC has been flooded with calls since this all began. It is no wonder that they have even just off the voice mail. And soon there will be a new CPSC with three new members to total five - one of which is the new chairman. And then all will change again - and unlikely in the positive.
