Lab cost comparison spreadsheet

I noticed many people have contacted some of the certified testing labs on the CPSC website and were receiving quotes back or having a hard time getting a response. I decided to contact all the certified labs in the US (there are 20 listed) and put together a spreadsheet for cost comparison. I posted it to a blog so you all can see the data side by side. Some labs have not responded yet so I will continue to update the spreadsheet until I receive all responses. Enjoy.

So just to clarify--you have some labs listed with results but no "y" in the "located in US" column. Does that mean that the CPSIA has listed them as a US based lab but the company says the testing will take place somewhere else?

Morning all, Just thought that I would mention that we thought information like this that can probably be printed on fabric would be nice to include in the protest quilt/wall pieces that we are interested in producing to advocate for the beauty of handmade products and how badly the CPSIA threatens their survival in the market place. And what a loss that is for everyone in the world.( I am hoping that I can find soy inks to print my icon on muslin with and include one in every quilt that it would fit into.) I'm putting over $100.00 worth of supplies into the kitty for the project- my pleasure and running around asking for quilt blocks to help tell our story. We are hoping to have at least one hanging in a public space before August. LOOKING GOOD SO FAR by the way!

---Someone mentioned on another topic that some of the labs listed for the US were actually located in another country so I thought I'd ask each company to clarify (these are the labs that the CPSC has listed as US). If the column is blank, the lab did not confirm when they responded to me. It doesn't mean they are not in the US, just that they didn't confirm so I've asked them to confirm that info and am waiting to hear back.

I have a question, you were asking them to test for lead Paint on apparel, not lead substrates? I see some did give substrate prices also. So if they just gave prices for surface coatings only then we still don't have prices for substrate, which is a separate test. Or am I confused? thanks for doing this, it's eye-popping.

--->That's a good question. I just asked for apparel but some gave substrate info. I am going to email back a lot of the companies with missing data and when I do I will ask them to provide this info also.

I just updated the link/spreadsheet with a few more lab responses that I received this morning.

I found it interesting that Specialized Technology Research only charges $24.75 for lead testing if you do it at their INDIA location but the US price was $135 or $100 depending on what you were testing for lead. I wonder why it is so inexpensive at the India and Asia labs...

Wonderful info, thank you, but what about phthalates? I understand that most apparel doesn't fall under the phthalates ban, but that is the part of third party testing that will blow me out of the water.

I didn't ask about phthalates but some of the labs included that info in their cost details that they sent so I'll add in that info later today so you can see the cost of that type of testing. I'll post an update to this thread when I update the spreadsheet again. Thanks :)
