This "note" follows the timetable in the guidelines put out by CPSC -
____________________
Note: The enforcement of the requirement for a general certificate of conformity for NON‐children’s products will resume on February 10, 2010. The Commission will be issuing additional information on this topic prior to that date.

It is from here -
http://cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/manufacturers.html#q5

Does anyone else see this as an inclusion of all products - children or adult in the enforcement of CPSIA? There does not seem to be any other reference to this other than the "note".

Surely CPSIA has an age limit of 12 and under. Where is this coming from?

This is very disturbing.

Re: Have you seen this Note in the Guidelines?

ginabee says:
from Studioalamode: "I am so tired of the government looking out for us, as if we can't look out for ourselves".

Ditto!

I've posted a whole thread about this kind of comment before. My son went BLIND in one eye because of toys that had lead in them when he went throught the teething stage. I only WISH the government had been looking out for us by enforcing the laws they already had in place. The fact that so many toys have come from China with lead in them is disgusting. I knew not to let my son chew on anything painted or made of metal, but I had no idea that plastic or fabric could have lead in it.

So, please STOP complaining about how this is affecting your business, and remember how REAL children have suffered. Just because it wasn't your child, doesn't mean that someone else's hasn't been affected!!

I have a business here too- one that also has to be compliant. But Lordy- childrens' health is at stake here-show some compassion!

Gosh, one would think we'd be able to take a page out of the tobacco play book & simply attach this label to everything we create:
"Warning! There's a remote possibility some random element of this item has the potential to cause cancer or other horrendous heath issue. Handle, breath, smoke, ingest, gaze upon at your own risk."

Re: Have you seen this Note in the Guidelines?

glassgrrl- you crack me up! I think the government would be using it's resources more wisely to educate people that many things can contain potentially hazardous chemicals. I know that I assumed that if it was a children's toy, it was being regulated for safety. It never occurred to me that the government was only "pretending" to enforce it's current laws. The way this whole law is being set up is simply way too broad. Not only will they be unable to enforce it, it is doing nothing to educate parents.

I would like to see the government start with the large toy manufacturers. Once they feel they can handle just that level of enforcement, then they can work on educating parents about the possible dangers of hand-made items. But to try to enforce this law at the level of handmade is simply too broad a task.

Crazy...never caught that myself. But, it'll never happen...don't let this beat you down. Just stay focused, stay positive! It will destroy too many people/companies. I firmly believe there are too many of us fighting out there!
